Question about Whirlpool GC5SHEXNS Side by Side Refrigerator

2 Answers

My side by side was not very cold.

Like others that have posted, I noticed the post between the doors was very hot. Found the condensor fan not running and the coils very dirty. The fan started with a little boost. I lubricated both bearings and the fan spins freely when unplugged. When I plugged it back in the condenser fan started running, however the fan doesn't seem to bee turrning very fast. I have never seen the fan run and don't know how fast it should turn. Is it possible that the motor is bad and not running fast enough. By the way, the door post is still hot. Not as hot as before but still hotter than it should be. I know that the heat is due to the freon loop to reduce condensate, but for some reason my heat exchange is lacking and as a result there is too uch heat in the freon loop. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim LaGrone

I agree with ssclifford. That is what I did with mine and the problem is fixed. I ordered my motor from parts.com. Get the part # of your motor from the motor itself. Mine was not the exact model that I replaced and I first thought they sent the wrong motor. But it worked. They know what they were doing.

Jenn-Air JCD2389GES problems

The condensor fan cools the condensor coils. If it is running this will cause a no cool situation. Also, if the condensor coils are plugged with dirt that insulates the coils and causes a no cool situation. These things will make it so the freezer isn't cold enough to freeze water so the icemaker will not produce ice. As far as the door edges getting hot. A condensor line runs thru the cabinet between the doors and this is called the mullion. If it is too hot this is a good indication of a bad condensor motor or dirty coils. Clean the coils and check the status of the fan motor and let me know what you find and we will see if we need to go further.

The post between where the freezer and

Hi, Welcome to FixYa.

I`ll start by letting you know first the heat between the doors is normal...to a degree, and done by design to help prevent moisture along the "breaker strip"/divider.

If all else appears fine, temp. Ok, fans running, no significant frost build up on freezer back wall, it's likely nothing to be concerned about.

**Just be sure the condensor fan isn't jammed and still turning.** The fan at the back next to the compressor.

The amount of heat can be determined by several factor's such as,

1) temperature setting - lower ( colder ) the temperature is set the more the run time the hotter the strip.

2) The ambient temperature - hotter the environment the more the unit runs to compensate, hence the hotter the strip.

3) The amount of "fresh" content added to the unit ( especially freezer section if unfrozen items added ) - new items add a lot of warmth thus demanding the unit to run more to remove this heat (btu`s or british thermal unit`s )causing the strip to be hotter.

4) Build up of dust & dirt on the condensor coils - this also causes the unit to run excessively which in turn makes for more heat on this strip.

These are all things which can and do determine the amount of heat between the doors.
Another factor to always consider is of course If it is hot where you live the unit may just be running more to compensate as with other factors I mentioned.

Hope this answer's your question and let me know if I can assist you further. Thank's for coming to "fixya" and good luck moving forward.

Ok.. Just a bit of info for you if you have to sometime in the future do a parts search. This unit is the same as the Hotpoint HSS25GFTWW

Now for the icemaker problem.

When ice makers start making less ice it is usually a sign of some other problem.
1. Ice build up on the evaporator coils in the back of the freezer.
2. A slow or not functioning evaporator fan.
3. Dirty condensor coils in the back or the unit
4. A condensor fan that is running slow or not turning.
5. An automatic defrosting problem (most common problem)

If you have ice cream you probably notice that it is softer than usual. Or things in the freezer just are not as stiff as they usually are. When you notice this the freezer is warming up but the fresh food compartment is fine.

1st.. check to make sure the control panel settings are set to "0" for the freezer and "37" for the fresh food compartment.

2nd.. look for any obvious signs of ling build up in the bottom and back of the unit.

3rd .. Listen to the evaporator fan in the freezer compartment.
a. must be running full speed
b. should not sound like it is striking anything

4th.. Is the chassis near the doors hot to the touch? (should be warm not hot)
a. if hot to the touch the condensor is not getting rid of the heat due to lint build up, or slow / stuck / failed condensor fan.

5th.. there is always the very rare chance that there is an actual problem in the ice maker. (thermostat)

When i stop the car the air in the car get hot but when i'm moving the air runs good. What could be the problem

Have your a/c condensor fan check out, sit in back of the radiator, fan should always be on when a/c is on to reduce the freon pressure in the condensor or a/c will not get cold till air goes through the condensor while driving down the road, no air blows through at stop light because fan not working so a/c will not work right.

Hello, we have a whirlpool side by side (estate...between the doors is very hot the compressor is so hot you'd have to have pot holders to remove it. the fan is running fine the fridge and freezer are both...

Check the condensor coils and clean them. The condensor fan may be running slower than normal. It is working hard to move the heat. The area between the doors has a line there purposely to keep it warm so moisture that condenses there when the doors are opened evaporates and doesn't cause mold.

FIRSTLY THE CONDENSOR DOES GET HOT TO A CERTAIN DEGREE THAT IS NORMAL.HAVE YOU NOTICED IF THE CONDENSOR IS BLOCKED WITH DIRT.IF THE UNIT IS FITTED WITH A COOLING FAN NEXT TO THE COMPRESSOR (MOTOR) MAKE SURE THAT IT IS FUNCTIONING WELL.YOUR LAST RESORT COULD BE THAT THE INTERNAL FAN MOTOR OR SENSORS ARE NOT WORKING CORRECTLY.GOOD LUCK

Freezer works, fan works, fridge side not getting cold

Whip, make sure the condensor fan is running in back. It should be running anytime the compressor is running. Check to see if you have a buildup of frost on the back of the freezer panel, this could indicate a defrost issue. This refer is controlled by one main mother board in back. Check these things first and post back. You may have to do some tests on the board...Catriver..post back.
