If the spring is approximately one inch in diameter an about four inches long it was attached to the drum and, along with others, held the tub in a central operating position. The machine should not be operated without it. What is the brand and model number??

The spring is likely damaged - it needs to be replaced at the bottom of the drum.

You will see the 3 other ones mounted. Put the new one on similarly.

Hook one end - then use a screwdriver as a fulcrum and pru the other end over to mount.

I think I broke a gear in my washing machine... It makes a knocking noise

you have these springs ,that help keep the tub from bumping into the casing .go behind the washer look under the tub part see if you can find a spring mounted on an arm there then look on the other side .if one of them is missing look under the washer ,find and slide spring back into it's slot.it is what balances the load.
i had that happen to my washer and my friend showed me how to fix it just in case it happened again.
banged around only in spin.hope this will help you.

Can not run spin cycle bang bang bang

Check the Vibration damper rods to be sure that...
1. They are there and mount is solid.
2. If they are broken in 1/2.
3. The plastic knuckle mounts are not missing/broken.
4. There is oil in the shock absorber/spring section of the rods.

Also - there are suspension springs on the bottom of the tub that could be broken and/or missing.

Replace/repair as necessary.

Kenmore wash basket

Hi pagrzych,
If the tub is getting out of ballance you can first make sure the rear automatic feet are leveled by tilting the washer forward and dropping it back down, the rear feet are made to automatically level when the machine is tilted forward. If after leveling you still have a problem the kenmore washers have springs that center the wash basket into place. Pull the washer out and tilt it back you should be able to see the springs on the back bottom of the wash tub. The are directly behind the motor and transmission. These springs can be easily replaced if broken or if they have came out of position. Good luck with your repair and I really hope this helped you. Please rate me if I helped.
Thanks
