Question about Kenmore Washing Machines

Open Question

Washer or dryer causing only towels to snag and fray

I purchased this set of washer and dryer brand new from Sears in 2004. It is the Kenmore Calypso Elite. I did call Sears and there is no recall for the product and it is out of warranty. The problem is only affecting our towels. I thought at first that we might have a dude set of towels. It is also doing it to our cleaning towels as well. I went and bought brand new towels thinking this might solve the problem. I only washed one of the brand new towels and the same thing happened on the very first wash. The more you wash them the worse they get. I however did not look at the towel before I put it in the dryer to see if the fraying and pulling out fibers and leaving strings was present. I only noticed after I dryed them. I have looked at the inside of washer and dryer to make sure they are not snagging on something. I didnt see anything obvious. The washer is a front end loader but load from the top. It doesnt have the agitator in it. I would figure the problem is with the washer. I would take any suggestions or recommendations. Has any one seen this before? Thanks for the help.

Mine has the exact same problem. Just like Jeff D. described. I would love to find a solution. We have ruined a lot of towels.

It appears your Agitator/Agitator Dogs has failed in this instance.

For replacement parts - head on over to or and enter in your full model number for a full parts listing.
I recommend both sites because ...

FixYa has no affiliation with either site - I have been using and recommending them for years - trouble free.

PartSelect has a great schematic database for locating the part on your unit and great "testimonials" for each part that often times includes HOW-TO information.
RepairClinic has pictures of each part they sell and also a great how-to and troubleshooting for basic repairs.

If your unit has never been serviced - there should still be an original service manual enclosed in plastic taped to the inside of the shell.
In the service manual are Error codes, maintenance procedures, and troubleshooting steps you can follow.

Anything too complicated or beyond your scope should be handled by a professional.

If you think you want to tackle the repair - and have gotten stuck on a step - reply to your question and I will be glad to help you out.

I'm guessing it's a mildew smell, if it is try setting the machine with nothing in it and use some Affresh once a month, you never know it might solve the other problem too.

Whirlpool calypso

the calypso washer is much older then 2 years. they stopped making them quite a few years ago. what you are seeing is how towels will come apart when washed with an aggressive washer. even expensive towels can be poorly sewn and will come apart when washed too hard. i might suggest you use the light cycle as it has a slower washing cycle speed. if you check your older and "better" towels are not doing the same thing as your new towels. i know its not fair but it is the way towels are now. you can try to remove the threads that are coming off your newer towels and then all should be ok, but there is nothing wrong with your washer just the way towels are now.

Check the lint trap on the dryer. We had the same problem and it was because we put the lent trap in backwards.
