Hi,

Several suggestions: 1. What operating system are you using? If it is Windows, then the printer tray can be selected in the Settings/Printers/Properties/Paper/PaperSource Note! You must have the correct driver installed. 2. The ESC&l#H sequence allows embedded commands to select trays. The info in the 5si Printer Users Guide (approx page 7-14)has some troubleshooting. The 5si printers at my workplace have automatic tray rollover. When one tray goes empty, it moves to the next tray with the correct size. Hope this helps.

Your issue is in defining which paper tray you want to use from the application side. Depending on your app I'm guessing MS Office when you've selected the 5Si in the printer select menu the print driver will know what tray's are available. The user must select the correct tray for a particular document and these setting will hold for this document. Otherwise the default for both trays with letter in them is to pull from the lower tray and when that runs out or is unavailable to pull from the next tray up with letter inserted. This link explains where the printer will pull from depending on how you set up both the app and/or control panel.

The windows driver selection does not matter if the trays are set to the same paper sizes, it will default to the tray set on the PRINTER under it;s internal defaults. ONLY if the trays are set differently are the printer drivers able to select the different trays, therefore if you have a different color paper in one tray you must set it to landscape and the default tray to portrait or vice versa to be able to switch back and forth ( to increase print speed always set your default tray to landscape so that you are printing 11x 8 1/2... you will be feeding 2 1/2 inches less paper per print job, and saving wear on your fuser and drum as you will be using the whole surface and not having an edge of paper rubbing on the surface as it feeds, creating a wear mark that will show up on documents of different orientation

My HP 4100N printer often automatically selects to print from tray 1 (the manual feed), when I want to print from tray 2 (the automatic feed). How do I set the default tray?

HP Laser Jet 4100 HP Not pulling paper from Tray 2
Action: The 4100 will look at tray 1 first then tray 2 If tray 1 is empty it will pull from tray 2 if the papersize matches the job otherwise back to tray 1 and ask for the paper. Your machine likely thinks the paper in tray 2 is not the size you want. For instance you have LETTER in tray2 But the machine thinks it is legal. The LJ 4100 detects the paper size in tray 2 automatically. If you print a configuration page: MENU them INFORMATION then ITEM then CONFIGURATION PAGE then SELECT. The page will print and show what size paper the machine thinks is in Tray 2 if it says LEGAL and you have LETTER you need to Check The Paper Backstop in TRAY 2. The back stop sets the length of the paper if it is not at Letter (8 1/2 x 11) the machine will not detect LETTER. Even if it just a little bit off or between positions.
If it is set at LETTER then you may have bad switches in the machine that are operated by the tray. Or the arms on the tray that operate the switches are not moving properly. You will find the arms on the rt, side of the tray and feel them change position when you move the backstop.

Hope this helps helps. Please keep us updated and remember to rate this answer. TF

Printer will not kick out document automatically, attention lite keeps flashing. tray 2 selected but always defaults back to tray 1

Sounds like you have a mismatch in the paper you are trying to print on and the paper that is loaded in the printer. HP printers look to feed paper from tray 1 anytime the computer settings don't match the paper loaded in tray 2. Tray 1 is the multi purpose tray and prety much any size paper can be loaded in tray 1. Double check your document settings and double check the paper size loaded in the paper tray 2 and make sure they match. Also try printing a different document to see if the error persists. If it does this on everything you try to print you should also double check teh rear guide in the paper tray. There is a rear guide in paper tray 2. If it slides back too far it will make the printer think that paper longer than 8 1/2 x 11 is loaded. Push the paper all the way forward in the tray and push the rear guide until it is snug with the tail end of the paper stack.

if you using office go to page setup and select the tray(s) that you want to use for the first page and other pages ( both must be the same ) unless you only want the first page as letter head and the rest on plain paper or something along those lines ?

Also if you go into the properties of the printer and go to advanced and then click on the printing defaults button and see if the options in there are the same or different to whats in printing preferences.

If they are set to tray 1 then it will default to tray 1

Settings in HP Printer LJ 4100.

The 4100 will look at tray 1 first then tray 2 If tray 1 is empty it will pull from tray 2 if the papersize matches the job otherwise back to tray 1 and ask for the paper.
Your machine likely thinks the paper in tray 2 is not the size you want. For instance you have LETTER in tray2 But the machine thinks it is legal.
The LJ 4100 detects the paper size in tray 2 automatically. If you print a configuration page:
MENU them INFORMATION then ITEM then CONFIGURATION PAGE then SELECT.

Hope this helps.
