No , this is possible , you really have 256MB but 16Mb is "Stolen" by the onboard video card for your display

How do I replace the CMOS Battery in my ZPC? Cause - CMOS battery has gone bad
When replacing the CMOS battery in the ZPC, be sure the External Power Supply is unplugged and no accessories are plugged into the unit. Carefully remove the 5 bottom screws and the 2 screws on the back to remove the keytop. Once the unit is open, simply remove the bad battery and replace it with the new one. We use a standard 3V Lithium battery that can be found in most stores. When everything is put back together, be sure to press the CMOS reset switch on the side of the unit. Boot up the machine and repeatedly press the delete key to enter the CMOS Menu. Choose to Load Optimized Defaults, then press F10 to save and exit. The PC will now boot up normally

Is it possible to install high desnsity memory RAM on a T42

The T42 can support up to 2 Gb of RAM.
The laptop comes with 512Mb of RAM under the keyboard and a spare memory slot on the bottom of the laptop.
To install 2Gb of RAM put 1Gb in the memory slot under the kerboard - need to remove the old RAM and put the other 1Gb in the memory on the bottom of the laptop

T42 Memory specs.
  • 64-bit Double Data Rate (DDR) non-parity SDRAM memory
  • PC2700 at 333MHz
  • Two 200 pin SO-DIMM memory slots, one slot is pre-populated with 256MB or 512MB, leaving one socket available
  • Supports up to two 1GB SDRAM SO DIMMs
  • Supports maximum memory up to 2GB

You should bumb your memory from 256 to at least 512, and better yet if at 1024.

Memory problem

It's possible that the new RAM is incompatible with your motherboard. Check board specs to see list of supported RAM & check against what you have. Hope this helps.

Ram problem

IT IS A SHARED MEMORY
You won't like the resolution if you remove the 8mb buffer in bios set-up, trust me.(it will make your display look like 16color windows 3.1 or worse) You could try it and it will get you back that 8 meg the other is shadow ram, don't mess with that either.
Your options in advanced video are 8mb and 1mb. My advice, leave it.
