First, let me inform you that if you contact Pentair, either through email or phone, and let them know that you can not read the valve label on your filter, they will send you one through the mail.

One thing that helped me remember the position of the valve handle was that the WASTE position is always located over the Waste Port on the filter. If you know where the FILTER position is, stand by the filter so that FILTER would be at the top, or the "12 o'clock" position. Now, going to the right, clockwise, the positions are as follows: FILTER, RINSE, RECIRCULATE, BACKWASH, CLOSED, WINTERIZED, WASTE.

To change the position of the handle, you will need to stop your pump, push down on the handle-lifting up the pointed end- spin the handle so that the pointed end will sit pointing toward the position you want.

If you do no have an Owner's Manual, you can find one online at the following link:

Backwashing A Sand Filter with A Push/Pull Slide Valve or Multiport Valve

Lots of people are first time pool owners and pool professionals forget to teach these "newbies" about the simplest aspects of pool ownership.

One of the biggest questions we receive from new homeowners is "How do I go about backwashing my sand filter exactly?"

It doesn't matter if you have a Hayward, Pentair, Jandy, Sta-Rite or any other number of Sand Filters on the market they all utilize the same basic valves for backwashing; a push/pull slide valve or a multiport valve.

To backwash with a multiport valve:
1) Shut off pump motor.
2) Press down on valve handle, rotate valve from FILTER to BACKWASH position.
3) Roll out any backwash hose or open any waste line valves.
4) Open air bleeder assembly on filter, and turn pump on.
5) Watch pressure gauge for backpressure and hose for kinks. Be prepared to shut off pump quickly.
6) After hose fills with water, run for 3 - 5 minutes or until water runs clear.
7) Shut off pump motor and move multiport valve handle to RINSE position. Run on rinse for 15 - 25 seconds.
8) Shut off pump motor and move multiport valve handle to FILTER position.
9) Turn pump back on and note lower pressure.
10) Roll up backwash hose so the dogs use it as a chew toy.

To Backwash a sand filter with a slide valve:
1) Shut off pump motor, roll out backwash hose.
2) Twist to unlock plunger T-handle, push or pull(depending on manufaturer) the plunger 2" - 3".
3) Open air bleeder assembly on filter, and turn pump on.
4) Watch pressure gauge for backpressure and hose for kinks. Be prepared to shut off pump quickly.
5) After hose fills with water, run for 3 - 5 minutes or until water runs clear.
6) Shut off pump motor and push T-handle back down into locked position.
7) Turn pump back on and note lower pressure.
8) Roll up backwash hose.

Sta-Rite leaks out of backwash pipe.

not a good idea to switch valve when pump is running. you could try rebuilding the valve wit a kit and some magic lube. mark the valve with a marker or a file so you can be sur to reasemble it right

My sta-rite pump leaks out the backwash port looking for a rebuild kit

If you remove the bolts around the top the handle and lid assembly will pull out. Under that is a spider gasket that needs to be replaced. Clean out and dry the slots where the spokes of the gasket go, and replace with a new gasket using contact adhesive or vinyl adhesive to glue the gasket in. Do not put anything on the top of the gasket.

It's a good idea to replace the diverter o ring and bearing while you have it open. This requires removing the handle from the diverter. The o ring is on the diverter shaft, the bearing is the white plastic ring that goes between the lid and the handle. After that the backwash valve will work like new.

How to backwash my PLM-100

no you take the filter out and wash it off, try to do it in the shade or on a cloudy day, the sun damages the filter material (DE type filters)
these DE type filters are a no nonsense affordable filter that don't have all the bells and whistles, but do a better job filtering than a paper cartridge type filter

How do I rinse the filter and when is it necesary to backwash?

It seems these filters are for 1 time use only. You might as well through them out. You can try backwashing. The best thing is using filter cartridges you just replace them as you go. Good luck.
