In normal Desktop, yes the Monitor is a separate card, but on laptop, and tables, and netbooks, the monitor is a "on board" so there is not a separate card, So if the monitor goes bad there is no way to replace other than the total motherboard
If your laptop is tx1000 with amd processor and has symptoms like: powers up lights on but doesn't boot up display is black then it has a bad mother board. You can ship the laptop here for repair.
Laptops have onboard graphics cards. If garaphic adpter is not working has to change the motherboard.
Try with PCMCIA graphic card. Then can identify the problem.
