This happened to me with my side by side. The repair man came to my house, said that GE have cheap refrigerators because they are not meant to last very long. The mother board that controlled the temperature went out. A component in my freezer would get frosted up, but the heater would not kick in to reduce the freezing. Everything starts to warm up in the refrigerator as a result. A new motherboard would get the refrigerator back in timing.

I had this same problem. You need to totally empty the fridge and freezer and allow it to defrost for 24 hours. Then put it back on and it will work. This happens if someone leaves the freezer door open and then it gets closed. The defrosted water freezes in the pipes and doesn't allow the cold air to move up into the fridge so the freezer gets even colder. This has happened to me twice!

Check the compressor.
Unplug for 15-20 min. plug it back in and listen for the compressor to start. You will have to be behind the ref to listen and make sure you hear the compressor start and not just a fan running. If you hear a clicking noise then the compressor relay is bad.

You most likely have a defrost problem. Check the inside back panel of the freezer. See if there is ice built up. If so, you have a problem with the defrost. 85% of the time, it's caused by a bad heater. It could be the termination thermostat, timer or fan. If the ice is built up. Take the panel out and defrost with hair dryer. If you want, you can now check the heater and termination thermostat. It's a closed switch that opens on the rise. If you fix it your self or not, To save your food. You can replace the panel and turn the fridge back on, it will operate correctly for 3 or 4 days. This will give you time to either get the part and fix it or for someone to get out and repair.
Please rate solution and make it worth the while to summit solutions. Thanks
