There is a spring loaded handle in the top center where the paper comes out, you pull the handle toward you and lift at the same time.

My HP G 85 wont print Yello or Blue

Hello Donald Lieberman,

Welcome, and thank you for using FixYa!

To answer your question: This problem normally points back to cleaning the contacts on the haed where the cartridges are loaded in. If you take a #2 pencil and wipe these contacts down, before re-inserting the cartridges, it may start working again. If not, I recommend replacing the printer. It is cheaper to replace this printer, and have the extra ink cartridges for it, than to repair it.

Have a great day!

I bought my G85xi in 2000 from Costco. I have used it with care & have had only a few problems with it (bad cartridge once, dried out cartridge once, bad FAX board which was replaced under warranty). The quality of the printing, etc is excellent. I've been using the large color #78A cartridge (38 ml.) from Costco which costs about $53. A pack of 2 black #45 cartridges is about the same ($52) (42 ml.)
I also bought a slightly used G85 from a flea market (mainly for back-up parts). I have an hp 6110 all-in-one bought in 2005 which is better than the models produced today, but not as rugged as the G85. Also, HP has rigged the newer models (including my 6110) so that you can't do any printing if the cartridge is determined to be low in ink. to make matters worse, they don't tell you which cartridge is low - only give a message to "remove & relace the cartridges".

Paper Jam - HP G85 Ink Jet Printer

You open the door from the back of the printer (turn the knobs) and the paper can be removed from the back. After removing paper jam, replace the door. It is a long door as wide and the printer, but about 2 1/2" wide.

Cartridge

Easy! Just open the front latch by lifting up, unlock the cartridge you are replacing, and snap in a new one. I caution you to use only HP new cartridges for best results. You can find a pretty decent price on them at www.amazon.com. Also, reset your ink counter in the HP Image Zone to reflect the new cartridge install. Then run the align cartridges option and you're all set. Hope that helps. If so, please rate this solution. Thanks!

My G85 wont print yellow

This can happen for very old cartridges, even if they still have ink. The cartridges have a shelf life and can lose colors (usual yellow and cyan first) if stored for years.

If this is an original HP cartridge check the cartridge warranty date as shown here. If the cartridges are within their two year warranty call HP at 1-800-HPINVENt or contact your dealer for replacements. If the cartridges are beyond their warranty period then purchase a fresh cartridge.

When buying new cartridges look for the "install by" date on the package. I would look for a package with at least six months remaining before the "install by" date, which would have a year of remaining warranty.

When storing unused cartridges for an extended period keep them in a cool place and keep them upright as they would hang on a store display. This will provide maximum shelf life.

You can verify the issue is the cartridge by carefully blotting the printhead on a damp tissue. A good cartridge would have a stripe of Cyan, Magenta and Yellow, your cartridge will only show Cyan and Magenta.

I am sure that a fresh cartridge will solve your problem.

HP G85 All says remove and check color cartridge and prints only green/blue color

This is a known issue on this machine. What I do is open the printer as if replacing the cartridge and allow the cartridge holder to move to the exchange position. Then I unplug the power cable from the back and close the printer again. Keeping your finger on the power button, plug in the power cable again. Keep the button pressed for about 10 seconds, allowing the error flag to reset. Switch on again and wait for the initialise to finsh. It sometimes takes another 5 minutes for the message to disappear but it should go eventually.

Printer Cartridges

Since this is an all-in-one. It could be any of the following: A software glitch since these are software driven. Check HP for updates. A clogged nozzle on the cartridge- try cleaning the cartridge print nozzle with a foam tip swap or coffee filter soaked with ink jet cleaner or 90% isopropyl alcohol. Try a different cartridge. Try cleaning the contacts. Try using the HP image zone software. Go to Setup, Tools, and Clean print cartridge. Worst case scenario bad flex cable or board.
