Problem for Apple iPod touch Digital Media Player

Itouch only showing itunes icon/connect cord

My itouch was working fine all morning. I shut it off and back on and now all I see is the itunes icon with a adapter connect cord arrow pointed to it. Tried rebooting several times but goes right back to the itunes/connect cord. What's wrong?
