I have a 16.5 hp onan engine in a 1979 gravely tractor -with engine running why are my ignition points sparking


Ignition points open to collapse magnetic field in ignition coil to make spark. They have a condenser across the points to reduce the spark which comes because the current collapse also generates a back feed current in the now open circut in the primary windings. This is the spark that damages and wears out the points. Check with a competent Auto Electrician that the condenser (also called a Capacitator) is the right capacity for the coil being used.

make sure the points are very clean and gap is set correctly ! is the timing dwell set ? remove one coil and try it on other cyl and see if it now sparks , if yes then replace other coil , are the 2 sets of points or one ? have you checked condencers ok ?

1986 Harley Davidson/Columbia Gas Par Car- Switched ignition to a points system. I got it running but need schrematic for wiring system. Can anyone point me in the right direction?


A points system wiring is simple. All you need is a switched hot wire. Connect that to a coil that has a primary resistance of 5 to 6 ohms, (a early points ignition Sportster coil will work) on one side with the points connected to the other side of the coil. The points grounds the circuit causing the magnetic field to build up. When the points open, the field collapses creating the spark in the secondary side of the coil going to the plug. If it's a single cylinder engine, simply buy a coil for an early points type automobile engine. You want a primary resistance of 5-6 ohms to keep the system from drawing too much current.

Hi ive just got a cb900f2 boldor. It has been in a shed for 5 years, previous history unknown. The seller has put new plugs and carbs on it. It will whind over but no spark at plugs. I dont know alot...


pick ups work similar to points
The coil needs power, when the points open the coil field collapses and it sparks
With pickups they trigger the electric igniton box to do the same job as points.
if you have power to the coils, when you touch a pick up with a screw driver it should trigger a spark.
You dont often get two coils fail or two pick ups fail simutanously, but a faulty ignitor box will stop all spark.

PS (not ignition related)Check the rivets in the wheels if it has them

Well, the next step is to access the points, you need a puller to remove the flywheel, and then replace the points and condencer, adjust them and lube the rubing block, reassemble and try again.

THIS presumes that you already inspected shut off grounding system....

Try reinstalling the points . It is real easy to have them short. Some times it takes two or three tries to get points in correctly (so they don't ground out).

Its a sigma 81 im not getting power to the distributor,the wires that go to it are dead


What is it a 2003 or a 1981 as 2003 dont have a distributor,,and a distributor on a 81 has but the wires are only live when the battery power is turned on and that is power to 1 side of coil (pos)side only and when contact points are open then power is on both sides of coil,, and condencer and point will spark when points are opened also check,HT leads
