Thank you, but of course we had adjusted every darned thing we could think of and contrast was amongst the first. The scanner software is not very good with the xerox 4800 scanner althpough the scanner itself is fine but without the software lower resolution models work better

Pencil drawings are 'weak', you need to adjust the contrast to get good output. Try different options.

I don't know how i will start drawing manga on MS PAINT, can you please help?

  1. Open up the MS Paint program to start a new document. The program can be found in the Accessories menu on your computer.
  2. Click on the background and foreground boxes, and select the colors you want each to have. Using a white background and black foreground is the most common choice for drawing manga because you can colorize it later.
  3. Select the tool you want to use to draw a manga picture of a face, for example. Using the pencil tool allows you to draw any type of shape you want while clicking on the buttons for ellipses or rectangles will make that shape appear on your screen.
  4. Draw the facial features with the pencil or brush tools.
  5. Make light glares in the eyes by using the eraser tool. Click on it, and then remove a small section of color from inside the iris.
  6. Create hair by clicking the "Line" and "Curve" buttons. These tools draw lines wherever the cursor is placed.
Hope this helps :)

I've been scanning in drawings and the drawings each have some words at the bottom of the page. When I scan it, only the words appear to be recognized but not the drawing. It was working fine before, why...

may be you have written the words in darker ink and drawing might have been in pencil! scanner usually recognises dark areas and adjusts the picture based on it! make sure you darken the drawing as much as those words!

Bad contrast with scanner

Last things first: NO USER SERVICEABLE PARTS INSIDE.

That's the way HP does things. There are no rheostats or pots to adjust. It's all done electronically now, with chips and things.

You never said how it does with color or greyscale photos or drawings.

As for the RGB=(64,64,64), that's about right for the scan picture settings and the mixed (text and graphics) setting, and is particularly true for color picture settings. Have you tried using the setting for drawings (or line art), specifically greyscale drawings? Usually the greyscale lineart or drawing setting will render black text. You might also try scanning with the settings set for Text. If the greyscale drawing settings or greyscale text settings do not produce black text, try reinstalling your software and drivers.

If the contrast stays the same for all settings after reinstalling the software and drivers, and if it doesn't scan color and greyscale pictures correctly, then it sounds like your scanner is going bad.

As for the scans you've already done, you can darken the text by taking it into a photo editor, such as Paint Shop Pro or Photo Shop, and adjust the contrast and brightness to get the effect you desire.

Problem with my A3 flatbed scanner

The preview, if it is thumbnail picture, it is difficult ti decipher. Dont worry about that. Pencil drawings are very light and needs higher contrast. Try a few options and you can select the best one. If you scan a pencil drawing in grey, it may appear light and also file size will be bigger.
