Not all Inspirons have CD burners (the 4 factory options were CD-ROM, CD-RW, DVD-ROM, and DVD/CD-RW. You can confirm that via Windows Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager and double click on DVD/CD-ROM drives to see what model drive you have, then just Google it to see what it's capable of.
In case you have either a CD-RW type drive or a DVD/ CD-RW drive and it doesn't want to burn CD's , then it's a bad drive.
Should be IDE cable...IDE interface according to the specs. You computer has IDE connections so the drive should work.
HP DVD1040i Lightscribe 20X DVD Burner/Black/Retail
Mfr Part #
Internal DVD ±R/±RW drive with DVD±R up to 20X, double-layer recording, DVD-RAM, and LightScribe direct disc labeling
due to dusty environment it happens the lens gets dusty
open the dvd tray u can see that shiny eye like thing try cleaning th lens gently in round movement with a tissue paper or very soft cloth used to clean lcd screens see if it works , other wise ur DVD drive lens got weak from use now adays service centers are getting tons of them everyday for replacements
the combo drive you listed above is a cd-rw/ DVD-ROM....meaning that it will play and burn cd, cd-r, and cd-rw disks. the dvd rom will only be able to play dvd-rom and dvd-r disks providing they are in the proper format. check that the disk in question is not a dvd-rw or (+2) disk. the drive will not recognize that a disk is in the drive if the disk isnt compatable. try a dvd movie, if that works then a dvd-r, if that works then try a dvd-rw +1. if the last option doesnt work then you will have to stick with the dvd-rom and dvd-r, or purchase a dvd-rw drive to install.
Trying this should sort it, if not a drive fault:-
Right click My computer>properties>device manager>hardware, then on CD/DVD devices line, click '+' sign then right click on your CD drive and click uninstal.
Re-start your notebook and Windows should find it again and install drivers automatically.
Try a cd in see if any better.
