Vacuum making high pitched noise and smells like motor is burning

I have a dyson DC04, I believe. It's yellow. It has recently started making a high pitched noise when you turn it on and it smells like the motor is burning. It still sucks up stuff, but I don't want to run it for very long becuse of the noise and the smell. The roller still spins freely. Is the motor going out? If so, would it be cheaper to buy a new vacuum or to get this one repaired? I've had the vacuum for about 3.5 years now.

Try repair first for quote and if too expensive then replace. 5 years is about the average life span.

Dear Tasha ,
I suggest that you clean out the tubes and see if any paper has been rolled into the bottom. P.S. Do you know how tall 170 cm is in feet.

When running it makes a very loud quite high pitched long clicking sound . What can I do about it as I do not want to continue to use it like this

If the noise is continuous from switching on and slows down to a stop when machine is tured of it has to be some thing on contact with the motor or the brush roller the brush roller is easy to check the motor isnt but is less likly to go wrong

I have a Dyson DC04 which is making a strong burning smell within a few seconds of switching on. Is this likely to be the motor and if so can it be replaced?

More likely it is the beater brush which is jammed and not turning. Turn the machine over and remove the bottom plate. Unhook the drive belt, then try to turn the beater brush--it is likely bound up with string, thread, and hair. Try turning the machine on once--if the motor spins and makes vacuum, it is probably ok. Remove the brush assembly and clean it of debris. Clean the end bearings with a Q tip and WD40 oil, then wipe clean with another Q tip. Oil the bearings with 3-1 or other light oil. Check the belt for a badly burned area--replace if necessary. Slide the new belt over the brush and motor shaft, then drop the brush with bearings into the case, and check rotation. If ok, replace the plate and test on your floor. Hope this helps!

Was hoovering when my DC04 made a funny high pitched noise then a whirring noise, this was accompanied by a smell of burning and a puff of smoke! Almost sounds like it might be a clutch slipping, is this...

OK... the DC04 doesn't have a clutch. My best guess is that the belt that drives the brush roll has broken. The smell of burning and smoke puff were probably caused by the motor suddenly speeding up when freed of its burden of driving the brush roll. For illustrated guidance on checking (and if necessary changing) the belt, go to www.dysonmedic.com then scroll to the bottom of the page and click on "DC04 Belt Change Guide".
I hope this helps. If so, please remember to rate this response. If not, please post a reply and I'll try again. Good luck!

Dyson motor making high pitched noise. Is this

Most likely, there's something in the dirt tube. Ic could be something like a piece of paper or cellophane, vibrating from the air going over it. without hearing it, a high pitch noise could be different things.

Dyson vacuum cleaner DC04

I would suggest you invert the vacuum and remove the plate covering the spinning brush assembly. You should check the belt located on one side of the spinner brush to see if it is worn or broken. Also remove anything wrapped around the brush that could be affecting it. Ensure the brush is free to rotate and seated correctly. If the belt is worn or broken, or the spinner brush is unable to spin, replacements are available from a licenced repair facility. I hope it helps! Good Luck!
