Question about Garmin GPSMAP 295 GPS Receiver

1 Answer

My Garmin MAP 295 won't power up. Third time in 5 years.

The first time it wouldn't power up, I was told there was a problem with a loose circuit board. Sure enough, I opened it up & found a loose screw, tightened it and the unit worked fine for many months. About a year later, on a hot summer day, once again -it wouldn't power up, even when plugged in directly to aircraft's power supply. No loose screws this time. Didn't power up despite repeated efforts, for a couple weeks, then when I was going to demo the problem for my mechanic, it suddenly decided to work. Worked fine all winter and spring, then, last Friday, in the hot afternoon, it wouldn't power up again and still won't after fresh batteries, keeping it in a cool place for hours, plugging it in direct, checking connections, etc. Could it have anything to do with being exposed to hot conditions? Is this a typical problem for these units?

I have discovered an intermittent problem on my 10 year old 295 when powered by batteries.
It appears that the chrome plating is de-laminating from the battery contacts that are either side of the back panel attachment hole. At first glance it looks perfect but if you run a fingernail or other small item across the face of the contact you will see and hear a movement as if there a a loose layer of foil over it. This is causing all manner of faults including 'external power lost, shut-down in 30 seconds' when the external power was not even connected at all!

Where do i go to down load update for my gps 295. garmin said thay dont support this unit. thanks joe

Joe,

The Garmin "GPSMap 295" is at, as far as Garmin is concerned anyway, "end of life". This means Garmin will no longer support, repair, etc. this product. C'est la vie.

Garmin's older product lines lack the hardware to decompress the new "NT" (New Technology) maps that Navtek (the map company) is producing now. The NT maps are compressed so that they would fit on smaller capacity memory cards. By doing this, the maps required Garmin to include hardware (special designed circuitry) that could quickly decompress these maps "on the fly" for display. The much of Garmin's older GPSMap & StreetPilot lines predate this hardware requirement.

Our "still-functioning" GPSMap & StreetPilot GPSr will still pinpoint our location on the Earth as always - but lack the latest & greatest maps. You should review the maps that your GPSr can use and choose the one you prefer. I switched mine to display topographical maps. These show many of the road names like the City Navigator maps do, but lack important things like the POIs and routing. If you can do without them, this could be good enough. If you can't, you'll need to decide on whether the last non-NT map version is sufficient or purchase a new GPS that can accept the maps you want to put into it.

I hope this helps and good luck!

Garmin nuvi 295 says "can't unlock Maps"

You can get details of how to unlock your maps at http://www.fixya.com/support/r6197735-no_detailed_maps_found_support_routing

You should also back up your favourites folder when you've unlocked the map. You'll get details of how to do this at http://www.fixya.com/support/r8422587-backup_restore_favourites_garmin_nuvi

Batteries will not power unit

Check If the batteries are fresh and in the right way Always a chance of one not in there right or dirty contacts If they are then if the unit runs on the charger this indicates a hardware problem and you will need to send it in to Garmin for repair or refurbishment. They usually have a set fee that covers every thing. You may get your unit back or a diferant one if they can't repair it.

Recently bought a Garmin 205 and was told that there is a free update I am unable to do this please can you help

There are two types of updates for Garmin GPS units; firmware and maps. "Firmware" updates are always free and can performed by downloading the webupdater program from:

http://www8.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp

The site above provides a Webupdater download link and complete, easy to follow instructions. Connect the GPS to your computer & run the Webupdater program from time to time to make sure you have the latest firmware running in you GPS at all times.

Map updates however, usually require a fee be paid to access. If you purchase a GPS within a certain period of time from when a new map set is released, you'll often be allowed a "one time" free update. After that, you'll have to purchase map sets one at a time (at intervals of your choosing) or, purchase a "lifetime" map set subscription. Maps are updated up to 4 times a year, and a subscription allows downloading up to 4 map sets a year. The subscription is slightly more costly than a one time purchase, and for most people, is a much more cost effective method.

Contact Garmin Support first to find out more about map set availability and compatible maps for your GPS, below:

Garmin nivi 200 won,t turn on

The mini-USB jack needs to be either resoldered or replaced. When the jack is loose, you will not be able to charge the internal battery. The jack becomes loose from overuse. The jack needs more mechanical support to the pronted circuit board. I have fixed this problem many times.

Garmin gpsmap 295 will not run from internal battery power

I had the same problem. Reluctantly, I removed the batteries and the 8 phillips screws from the the case back perimeter. Be careful on opening. The unit is designed to open from the top and hinge at he bottom to keep the ribbon cables from being stressed. The unit should open nicely and lie flat on the table with the two bottom halves butted against each other. Get a magnifier and ensure the printed circuit board attached to the bottom half has all 3 screws. (I found one missing that has 2 functions - securing the board and delivering battery power. Mine had wedged against a piece of clear plastic...it was hard to find!!!) I carefully removed the wedged screw and returned to the circuit board left most attach point. Close up the unit and we were back in GPS heaven. Battery power restored!!!! and my $250.00 still in my pocket. Yipppeee.

Does Garmin GPS 295 contains Maps for Africa and the Middle East

Hi there -

The GPSMap 295 can only have one region at a time - North America, South America, etc. You can purchase an updated database specifically for Africa and the Middle East - it's about $50 USD. It will erase whatever region you have in there right now (you can't store Africa/MidEast with America, for instance. It's one at a time.)

The Garmin Website:

http://shop.garmin.com/aviation/databases/

lets you download new Jeppesen databases to your GPSMap 295. Select your model, then select which region you want.

***Before you buy:*** You'll have to have the data cable to connect it to your computer. Without that, you will have no way to update the maps and database.

If you do have the data cable, the process is very easy - just follow the instructions carefully, and make sure all the numbers they ask you for are correct. I just did mine today. Good luck!

Street Map Program for Garmin GPSMAP 295

Detailed road map data, with addresses, hotels, gas stations, etc. can be loaded into a data-card/cartridge/memory-card using Garmin's Mapsource software such as Metroguide or City Navigator. This can be changed as needed via a PC.
The 295 does not have driving routing/guidance through the streets as most of today's GPSs have, but it will show you exactly where you are on the street (but it should be switched to Road mode).
Driving routing is possible on the PC using Mapsource, but ithe route doesn't transfer well to the 295 because of the limits on waypoints.
