Question about Mantis 2-Cycle Tiller

1 Answer

Hello, I've had my mantis 2 cycle tiller for 2 years with about 5 total hours on the machine. It ran fine until this summer when all I can do is close the choke about 3/4 of the way to get it to run. It will not throttle up at all, just dies even with the choke 3/4 closed. I have taken the carb apart and the diaphram is fine, I soaked the carb in cleaner and blew out all the ports. STill the same problem. CAn you help me please?

    hey shad:

I went out and took the gas filter off and removed the screen, put the outer filter back on and tried it. No difference. I then took the fiber filter completely off and just let it **** gas. No difference. I also took the air line and made sure there were no restrictions in the air flow. There are no kinks in the air or gas lines and have blown air through them with no restrictions. Again, the thing runs (idles) with choke 3/4 way shut but not open, however if I start the thing without choke on and full throttle it will run at top speed but as soon as I let off the throttle it dies.

I have reset both the L and H circuits and messed with the idle screw too. Is it a common problem that these carbs need replaced? I have some experience with Model T to 57 corvettes and even 1936 Auburns and the carburation of all these. It seems there is no difference in what I am doing with this little carb that makes a difference. Fuel runs free, air is ok, spark of course ok. Could something be varnished up that I can't clean?

The filter in the tank may be clogged with dried on fuel.

also check fuel lines for leaks or kinks

check your idle screw on the throttle arm

also when you reassembled the carb after cleaning did you reset the curcuit positions

turn idle screw 1.25 turns for starters if it runs adjust to suit

the only other thing i can think would cause your problem is a lack of compression

    or a read valve stuck

Mantis tiller Idles fine, and can even rev... sometimes, but has no power.

check the diaphragm in the carburetor making sure it isn't stiff. depending on how long it has sat, the carburetor may need a cleaning and kit then readjust it to get it to run. Mantis tillers are very temperamental and can be difficult to get to run again even for experienced technicians

We purchased a mantis 2 cycle garden tiller new and have only used it 3 times. it has only been used maybe 1 hour total and now it wont start at all. what can we do to get it to start?

Empty mantis fuel tank. Remove and check spark plug. Replace with Champion CJ8Y or NGK BPM7Y if necessary. Gap is .6mm - .7mm or .024" - .028". Prepare fresh fuel/oil mixture. Add fresh fuel to tank along with 2 ounces of 100% acetone (available at walmart) - this will remove deposits inside of mantis from sitting for prolonged periods. Try to start several times. If unsuccessful let mantis sit for a while. Do this several times if necessary. Eventually it will try to start. If it will not remain started then you are successful in completing the previous section. Next you need to watch this video and do what it says. It is actually quite simple.

I have a 2-cycle Matis Tiller that was sitting for a while and will not start. I replaced the old gas with new, replaced spark plug, adjusted high/low set screws and choke to no avail. Can the carburetor...

Hi, I also have a small garden tiller (not a Mantis) that experienced a similar problem. What I did was remove the carberator and completely cleaned it with standard spray carb. cleaner (this is available at ant auto parts store or Wal-Mart). After I cleaned and reinstalled the carb. it ran fine. This was two years ago and it has been running fine since. What I believe happened was the gas evaporated and the remaining residue from the gas "gunked" up the carb. Once it was removed, the problem was solved. If this does not work, take a look for any broken wires. Sometimes a rodent will make a meak out of a wire. This happened to one of my cars. Good Luck!

My Mantis will run but I can't get it to "wrap up". It is a 2 cycle gas and about 6 years old. I have rebuilt the carburetor. It's just doggy and won't go into high speed. I have messed with the high speed...

If your Mantis has a ZAMA carb, replace it. Don't bother with a carb rebuild kit.

I had exactly the same problem, did everything you did. New carb fixed it. Runs like new now.
