My Mother had this same problem with her fairly new refrigerator (only two years old).

What I found was that the newer style of compressor starter that they use these days is total junk, and they can go out in just a couple of years...

The old school style actually had copper windings to carry the load, but the newer ones have a bi-metallic disk that can (and will) shatter, leaving your new refrigerator unable to start its compressor... (thus no cooling)

All I had to do was open up the compressor's wiring box on the compressor itself and replace the starter and my Mom's refrigerator was as good as new...

Why is that the bottom freezer compartment works but not the upper refrgerator ?

check for a stopped up filter or coil on the top side also look at temp control to be sure it is set to the low side try setting it lower to see if it helps. The controls sometimes get a "flat" spot actual dirty contacts and will not let the compressor come on, the nest step is to verify voltage to your compressor.

Stopped cooling

My refrgerator a Kenmore, model 106-71182101, with ice maker stopped cooling and freezing.I vacuumed the condenser coils, and
fan in the rear bottom, along with any other debris. I unplugged the frig because the compressor was very HOT!.Question? Could the compressor have a Locked-Rotor? If so what can I do to loosen it.

Refrgerator defrost phase troubleshooting

If your refrigerator is older it will have a mechanical defrost timer. You can locate the time and use a screwdriver to advance the timer to the defrost initiation point. If your heater and termination switch work to should get at least a partial defrost. You may hear it popping as the heater works on the ice. You could also use a Watt meter much the same. You would hear the compressor turn off and see a different watt draw come on (the heater). All things said the defrost timer/controller is the usual suspect.

Hi,

Many times a freezer and/or refrigerator do not work right because of a dirty condenser coil...there are also many other things that can go wrong.

If you are hearing a clicking or buzzing then check out the last two tips.

If your refrigerator is running but warm, then...

Check out these tips that I wrote about that... it is a great place to start trouble shooting your unit...and something that you can do rather then calling a repair person to do a simple thing for you...

Compressor Relay

remove toe cover from front of refrgerator and clean the condeser coil, if the condensor coil is block that is the cause for the start relay to have failed

Freezer and fridge areas both 50 degrees

Assuming you have a frost-free refigerator:
Is your motor-compressor running?
If so, check if you have ice in the freezer section; if so, maybe your defrost thermostat or heating element is kaput.
If the motor-compressor is not running, check in the back of the refrgerator if the defrost time is stuck open, bu turning clockwire the small test screw, with a 1/2inch screwdriver.
