It sounds like the sting is wound backwards. Try winding a short piece in the opposite direction. If it is backwards, it will be gone in a hurry.

SOURCE: B & D auto feed string trimmer won't advance string

Is the string spool seated on the rachet correctly? If so and all is well, it is worth noting that these trimmers auto feed fuunction is problematic at best, requiring manually unwinding some line every few minutes as the unit gets older.

SOURCE: string on weed wacker does not automatically advance.

the notice on the trimmer says it has an AFS Automatic Feed Spool, "NO BUMPING REQUIRED". I see that underneath the spool, there's a small plastic centrifugal weightwith a peg on it. . It kinda looks like it might advance the line each time the electric motor starts and stops. If there are loose clippings in there, or if the weight is stuck, it probably would cause the problem.

first guess is that you have installed it incorrectly

Black & decker LST201 direction loading the string weed eater

when you are holding the spool on which you wind the string wind the string on in a anticlockwise direction
if it uses 2 strings ( one out of each side of the spool
wind in both strings together in the anticlockwise direction
that way , when you put the spool in the head and go to use it , the string is wound the right way to feed out and not get tangled

How to restring drum on Echo 210 gas trimmer

Pull the head off by turning the inner hub counter clockwise while holding the outer head still. Once the inner head pops out, turn it over and look for the string rotation arrow. If you can't find the string winding directional arrow, start the trimmer and determine shaft rotation direction (generally counter clockwise) and wind the string in the same direction as the head rotates when installed.
Pull about 5 arm lengths of string out of a string spool and cut it off. Place the inner trimmer head on an object that will hold it while you pull the string to even lengths through the winding hole (the support brackets of a pickup truck tail gate work well for holding the inner head while doing this).
Begin wrapping the string double wraps in the proper direction, laying them evenly and closely to the previous wrap, working it back and forth as the string begins to build up. Avoid crossing the string over itself more than necessary, the string can weld itself together if the strands cross to awkwardly. Once the string is wound, hold the head with one hand and slide the string through the outer head holes, avoid letting the string come unwrapped.
Carefully place the inner head down into the outer header. Avoid letting the string get caught between the inner and outer head. Once the heads are together lock the inner head onto the outer head by turning it and locking the round knobs into the outer head slots.
You can trim the string or let the trimmer guard do it. If the string doesn't feed it is either wound the wrong way, tangled between the inner/outer head or welded to itself.

When I had this problem I replaced that ratchet toggle part that the string drum sits over. Do you use replacement refills or do you refill them yourself. If you wind the string in the wrong direction it all affect the auto feed.

Is he tuner supposed to light up green when the string is correctly tuned?

Before turning the unit on, press and hold down the calib/batt switch to check the condition of the battery on the battery meter.

Then either plug in your electric guitar to the input side of the AG-6 or if tuning an acoustic guitar without electronics placing the AG-6 near the front of the guitar should work. You will not need to press a button to select which string you are about to tune. The AG-6 will detect it and the corresponding light will turn on when it is tuned within range.

Turn on the AG-6 and start by striking the low E (thickest) string while open. This is the number 6 string or 6E. Slowly turn the guitars low E tuning key untill the red LED below the 6E marking on the AG-6 lights up. Continue stricking the open string and turning the key untill the needle centers on zero and the 6E light remains on.

Repeat this for the open A string untill the 5A light turns on and the needle centers on zero.

Repeat for the remaining four strings, 4D 3G 2B and 1E, being careful not to over tighten and break them.

Tip: It may be a good idea once the low E string is tuned, to tune the rest manually, especially new strings or strings way out of tune. Then tune again using the AG-6 tuner.
.
If installing fresh strings you will probably need to stretch each string and re-tune, possibly several times, before they hold their tuning.

Bought new Ryobi P2002P from local home improvement chain, less than 2 wks ago; after assembly and charging battery, I found the .065 string equipped with the string trimmer kept breaking when trying to...

My first choice for a repair is to return this unit to the store, so that they will know that what they are selling is not working.

My second choice is to have you put a good quality line on this trimmer. Ryobi has tried to save a few cents by using a very lightweight line. I have not had a lot of personal experience with battery operated trimmers, but my impression is that they are very light-weight and take significantly more time and effort to achieve the same result as their electric or gasoline counterparts.

Check your owners manual to see if you can use a size .080" trimmer line. Stay with round line. The square or star shaped lines tend to stick to themselves and don't feed well. If you have to stay with the .065" line, find your local lawnmower repair shop and see if they sell a higher quality line.

Good luck.

Homelite trimmer, gas, string - y is the string wrapping itself around the head of the trimmer?

The line on my new 26cc Homelite would also feed out by itself. That started me thinking the line was wound backwards. I wrapped the line in the opposite direction as was shown on the bump feed reel and now the dang thing works although the bump feed needs to be "bumped" pretty hard to work. Is it possible that the reel was manufactured with the (string direction) arrows pointing the wrong direction? The new 26cc unit is also underpowered compared to my older 25cc trimmer.

Sounds like you may have lost the little metal grommet that should surround the hole that the business end of the string comes through. This grommet is usually aluminum because it is a very good heat conductor. What happens is that the string rubs very hard against the edge of this hole, which heats up the string in that one little spot enough to melt it. If the hole is only plastic, it cannot dissipate this heat. The grommet dissipates that heat and the string doesn't melt. I don't know if you can buy a replacement grommet. You might be able to a generic grommet like the kind sold for tarps. Or you can replace the whole part that should have the grommet in it.

Try winding it the opposite direction. Make sure string is tight when winding. I usually keep one finger on the beginning piece of the string while I wind it up.
