Dim screen on a flat panel monitor

I have a flat panel monitor for my pc. The screen has gone so dim it is very hard to even see the icons. Everything else is functional as long as I can squint enough to figure out what the icon is. I hear it's just a bulb that needs replaced but don't know for sure.

Re: dim screen on a flat panel monitor

The LCD has gone dimmer, is there a way I can find new LCD to replace the old LCD on SGI 1600SW? Preferably new LCD like Apple imac glossy or Matted screen.

Re: dim screen on a flat panel monitor

The bulbs are mini fluorescent bulbs that with the proper inverter for that model screen can be replaced with a simple screwdriver. Parts can be found on ebay OR Google products.

Lid got slammed once and opened it and saw some lines and then nothing. Everything else seems to work I think but I couldn't get it to work with an external flat screen monitor. I have taken it all apart...

With the computer turned-off, connect the monitor to the SVGA port.
Turn the computer on -- the usual "start-up" messages should flash on the LCD screen.

Or, take the laptop into a darkened room, to see if the usual Windows "desktop" icons & wallpaper are dimly visible.

Or, take the laptop & the power-supply to a qualified technician, for professional trouble-shooting.

Have a 16" dell flat screen monitior. The display are very dim,and make for hard viewing. Tried to push buttons on computer but a locked icon flashes up. Tried holding the buttons to unlock but did not...

You need to hold the menu button for 15 seconds until the lock icon changes to unlock. Then you should be able to adjust the brightness of the monitor, assuming that the backlight is working properly. Hope this helps you.

17" flat screen upper half is dark until "thumped"!

The inverter board that controls the lighting on the screen is dying. since its a 5 year old monitor and only a 17 inch. the cost to repair is greater than the cost of buying a new one. unless you know how to replace the part yourself. I think its best to just buy a new monitor

Monitor goes black but shows icons...

I'll assume this is an LCD panel screen.

If what you are saying is the screen shows up and then goes dim or starts dim, and you can see a dark image of the system starting up and then displaying Windows...

Your problem is a bad CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) at the top of the LCD panel.

If the screen is totally blank, then it may be the power inverter.

You can find many websites that sell these parts, but make sure you have the right model.

If you feel comfortable with working on computers, you can replace this part yourself. Otherwise, you may want to pay a technician to do it. Make sure to get a fixed price quote before authorizing the work

Here is a website on LCD repair for laptops, but it the same principal for display monitors.

Dell - 17" flat screen

This sounds like the back light is gone on the monitir... to check this look very close at the monitor whet the PC has booted, if you see a VERY dim image on screen then it suggests that the back light is gone.

Many monitors hace a 3 year warranty so I would try a warranty claim before throwing it away

Dell E151FPp 15 TFT LCD flat panel dim

Do you have the same issue when the cable is disconnected from the computer? If so, and the the brightness function doesn't change, then you have an IC Chip failure and the replacement boards are not available to you or me as Dell is Dell and everything from them is proprietary. If you are under warranty pursue that if not, time to replace. Consider this a time, unwanted time, but time to upgrade.

Oh, your right about the sacrificial diode on the power card... you wouldn't see anything.

Hope this fixed ya.
