Hi, If you are having frost build up, you will need to remove the rear panel inside the freezer. Unplug the refrigerator. You will need to test the bi-metal switch that is located on top of the evaporator coil and it needs to be cold when testing it. If the bi-metal switch shows an open circuit, it will need to be replaced. If the switch shows a closed circuit, test the defrost heater the same way.
If both parts show they are ok, you will need to replace the defrost control which is located inside the fresh food section in the control panel.
If it is solid ice that you find after removing the freezer panel. the drain under the evaporator coil is plugged and will need cleaned out.
I hope this helps you. Please let me know if I can assist you further.

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure
check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

Frezzer is frozen but frig. is not cold

You most likely have a fan or a defrost problem, check freezer fan motor. if operative check for ice on freezer. if freezer is iced defrost manually (and carefully) check the defrost timer and the heater assembly. either could be problem

Our 20 month old frig in warm. We have turned the temp up twice yesterday and pulled away from the wall to insure proper ventilation but it is still warm this morning

Did you vacuum the condenser coil and make sure that the area is free of debri?

Most likely it is a problem on the inside. Do you have any ice build up in the freezer compartment? If so, ice could be telling the thermostat that all is well in thre refrigerator. Sometimes it is hard to see ice build up behind the back panel and you should take the food out, remove the shelves and remove the rear panel to get a good look. If there is ice there, you need to defrost your unit. Either unplug and leave the door open or hurry it up with a hair dryer - DON'T USE WATER TO DEFROST!

Once you have it defrosted, then you can plug it back in and check operation. If it worked and things start cooling down and freezing again, then you need to order the defrost assembly for your make and model because within a few weeks the ice will build up again and then you need to be ready to change the defrost assembly.

Hi i have a ge profile side by side. the digital temp inside the refrigerator side is reading frezzer 23 refrigerator 47. The frezzer wall is iced up. when i press against the frezzer wall the coil feels...

The evaporator coil behind the cover on the back wall inside the freezer will ice up under normal conditions. Every 8 to 10 hours for around 20 minutes the defrost timer (or in most newer models the electronic adaptive defrost control) will turn the defrost heater on to melt the built up ice. There is a defrost thermostat which prevents the heater from overheating the freezer by breaking the heater circuit when the temp reaches close to 32 degrees F. The entire cooling system shuts off during the defrost cycle and starts back when the timer advances through the cycle.

If this ice is not melted it will continue to build up until the air can't flow over the coil to circulate the cold air through the freezer and into the fridge. The temperature change in the fridge is usually noticed first followed by the freezer.

If the defrost thermostat is bad, it can prevent the heater from coming on OR it won't turn the heater off when it gets too warm. It is clamped to the evaporator coil at the top to sense the temp. If it appears to be misshapen it is bad.
With an ohm meter it should show continuity when cold and none when warm.
You can also bypass(disconnect the two wires plugged into it and twist them together) the thermostat to see if the heater comes on then. If it does then you know the thermostat is bad and needs replaced.

The defrost heater is located on the evaporator. It is in a tube which is at the bottom and can also go up the sides of the evaporator. On some types you can see a burnt spot if it's bad. With an ohm meter it should show continuity from end to end when disconnected from the wiring in the freezer. You can also test the wiring for voltage when it's in the defrost mode.

If you have a defrost timer you can test it. It can be located under the fridge behind the kick panel on the front. Some are in the fridge with the controls at the top. You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer because that means the timer is not running. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

If you have an adaptive defrost control instead of a timer, replace it if the heater and thermostat test good. It is located in the fridge with the controls in some models and on the back in others.

Temperature going up on freezer and frig overnight

The Unit has a defrost cycle either every six, tweelve,or twentyfour hours. It sounds like the thermal cut out is faulty located in the freezer side behind the wall where the fan is situated It is usually a steel round disk shaped sensor with two wires coming out of it.It,s purpose is to shut the power off to the defrosting element once it reaches the desired temperature to melt the ice away and them the unit cycles again after defrosting.Hope this helps.

Temp fluctuates in ge profile refrigerator and freezer

Mine is doing the same, but because we were getting frustrated with the interminted noise and motor we kept switching on and off until we realised the frig did not work at all. The key to our problem was, let the frig do its own thing as we realised it was auto defrosting. After 3 days of meddling with this thing, we thought we killed it. Just leaving it on and forgetting about it, it righted itself, and walla it has not missed a beat since. We even blew up another frig in the mean time because of the predicament we thought we were in with all the produce. Good luck and just let the frig do its own thing.

Samsung frig stopped cooling-

most new fridges have a self defrost mode once or twice a day because the coils ice up if it collects alot of moisture. it shuts the compressor down and turns on a heat coil to defrost (which can take up to a half an hour). usually on a timer that is adjustable.

Hi,

Okay if not the coils inside the freezer section behind the panel that covers the coils is where the ice is located? I don't know of any other coils inside the freezer? Did you confirm that compressor itself is running? Not just the fan and clarify again the location of the ice.If you have frost on the freezer coil, you probably have a defrost problem. Your freezer should go into a defrost cycle about twice a day. When this happens the compressor and fans shut off and a defrost heater in the freezer coil will turn on heating away the ice. This usually last 10 - 20 minutes. If the defrost coil doesn't defrost it will become a solid block of ice and this will inturn block the air from blowing into your refrigerator compartment. There are several things that can go wrong with the defrost cycle such as the defrost timer, defrost heater, or the defrost termination thermostat. After defrosting the coils with a hair dryer, they have not frozen up again in several days. I did notice that the air diffuser in the refrigerator side does not seem to open by itself. It is not broken physically. If I open the luevers manually, eventually they will close and not reopen.

OR

Relays will burn out for the same reason a light buld burns out. So many hours of life and they go. Also a power surge from a storm can cause them to go.
If the compressor is cold try a relay. If you hear the compressor click on and then click off after 3-5 seconds try a relay.

Thank You
