Where is the modem on this system? -I need to replace it.

    Found it under the keyboard. Took it out rebooted, then turned off and reseated it -now it works. Thanks. I guess I was looking for a picture of the MB, schematics, or someone who knew.

    Thanks for the "in general" answer -but the specific answer for this machine didn't match up. I appreciate your efforts.

Generally, the modem is built onto the motherboard. Replacing it will take the correct set of tools, the design plan of electronics on the m-board, or someone who does that for a living.
In other words, this is one of those "don't do this at home" types of modifications.

The Agere systems HDA modem is a 56kbps modem typically found on laptops. View it in device manager.

Start->Control Panel->System->Device Manager->Modems

Should be listed there. See if there is an exclamation mark next to it.

New, second modem won't recognize modem

You probably need to install network adapter driver on your new hard drive.
Go to my computer properties, select "Device Manager" and see if there is a network adapter installed and working.

Depends on your system, install modem first then the system should ask for drivers. Make sure your dial up modem drivers are appropriate to your operating system. Try the modem in a different slot, some modems are not compatible with some motherboards. If the My Computer/System/Device Manager can't see the modem, you have to try another modem or slot. Then install or Update drivers once the system sees it and will show Properties of it.

My computer says there is no internal modem., I have a e-machine model w3650

Normally, if the operating system no longer detects a modem physically installed in the system, it is likely the modem has failed. If you have had any thunderstorm activity or a power surge recently, there are good odds the modem was taken out by the jolt.

You can try reseating the modem in it's slot (it may have worked loose) and inspect it for burn marks or other damage while there.

If the system is under warranty, contact E-Machine and see if they'll replace it. If not, then buy a new modem, you can find them on line for little $$.

MODEM FRIED, NOW I GET COM1 ERROR WHEN REINSTALLING VIA CD(S)

If it's a separate modem card, replace it.

If it's the built in modem, you'll need replace the mother board.

If you have an extra slot, you might be able to install a cheap add-on modem card which should override the built in. But that's a long shot may not work but worth a try.
