The dishwasher drain line must be elevated above the disposal.

if drain is in proper position check the "p" trap under the sink for a blockage.

After a full cycle the dishes are covered with pulverized food on top shelf only.

Most (if not all) dishwasher have a food grinder in them just like a "garbage disposal" in your sink. (It's NOT really meat to be a garbage disposal)
In any case if the ground food is ending up back in the washer it means its not being flushed out when the washer empties.
You will need to remove the bottom rack and the bottom spinner. Open the pump and clear any debris The round tank tat the lower arm sits on should also be cleaned out. If the washer is over 5 yrs old consider replacing the impeller and all the pump hardware also.
Without specific Make and Model I cannot give you detailed instructions or parts #s. When asking about things like this alway have the make and model # Good luck

Any help appreciated

There is no disposal on your dishwasher , I have this same problem(or my lazy gf does) so does every lazy American who does not buy a dishwasher without a disposal built in(I sell appliances).

You have to rinse all the ***** off your dishes b4, you put them in. Make sure you have cleared out the drain filter or you will continue to wash and rewash the same food.

You could go real red-neck and take off the trap or filter(allowing food to escape the dishwasher), but the dishwashers pump will be destroyed in no time..

Even dishwashers with trash disposals built in have a hard time rinsing and disposing of all food on dishes.

I've had my Nautilus for 6 years and it cleans very well - but now, it won't drain fully and pools at the bottom of the unit. I have made sure that my garbage disposal was cleared first, too. and that...

If your model has the screen across the back with the filter, then yes use your fingers or a plier to unscrew the pop up valve assembly at the very back center of the dishwasher. Most likely, the cone shapped part has deteriorated and is not sealing properly, allowing water to flow back into the tub instead of all going out the drain. Replace the pop up valve assembly.

drain is plugged with food probably , its a good idea to rinse dishes before putting into the dishwasher, its not a garbage disposal unit

Why is my dish washer leaving food on my dishes that i loaded rinsed off?some dishes come out dirtier than i put them in there.

It is almost always because you have blocked the hole where the sprayer goes up through the middle of the dishwasher. If it cannot pop up the dishes will not only not clean, but the food will just deposit onto the dishes especially the upper rack.

Dishwasher overflowed, garbage disposal still works. Ran the dishwasher and noticed food and debris shooting back into sink thru garbage disposal. Water was on floor. Upon completion of full cycle, water...

Before loading into the machine you have to remove food particles. Washer will wash the greasy surface. If particles are left in the dishes, the same will find entry to the drain system. Check the drain filter in your machine. Clean them. Mostly problem will be solved!
