Question about Microsoft Xbox Console

1 Answer

I have a 1.0 version Xbox. i think the hard drive (HD) is died (red ring of death on light when powered on, hd clicks, screen says cant access HD)

I have looked online and it looks like the HD is locked to the motherboard (so without a modchip I cannot just put another HD in there and get it working again.

Is there another way to fix this w/out having to resort to breaking the DMCA (modchip) or paying out (over $50) for a replacement HD & Motherboard combo?

Sadly I don't think there is a solution, as you noted the HD is locked into the motherboard. You will have to buy a modchip to be able to upgrade/replace the disk. You are probably better off just getting a used Xbox, I bet they can be had at similiar price ranges. Check Gamestop or Ebay for used Xbox consoles.
