Re: Gateway M680 touchpad not working

Please confirm that you update the chipset driver downloaded from this site.
Then please right click on My_Computer and select Properties, select the Hardware tab and click on Device Manager.
You should see a list of devices, look for a question mark and see if it's showing the name of your device missing the drivers.
We will start from there to find the drivers with google or in the Gateway website.
Please let me know

If you use find hardware device for this you need to do a hardware scan and then check the list and see if it is listed if it is then select it and then if the hardware is on your comp it will be able to select it if its not then it will let you look for it on the net did you buy the laptop new if you did you will have all the instalation cds that came with it if not you might have to get one of these cds for that laptop and this will have the software on it for your pad but you might have to contact the makers for this disk or you could manually look for it on the net use a search engine type in your model number and look for instalation programmes hope this solves your problem

I am unable to format the hard drive on my Gateway Laptop. I am trying to wipe the drive by formatting it but no luck so far I try to use the Disk Maintenance program in Windows XP but it doesn'

You can't format the active drive / partition within itself. It's like throwing away your clothes while you are wearing them in public. You just can't do it. Sorry, that's the only analogy that came to mind.

You format it with a boot disk like, an OS installation disc, USB drive with an OS installation, or a boot disc you found online (CD or USB).

If you have none of those, boot to command prompt by pressing F8 during boot. When you get there C:\ Type format c: Thats it. No going back, so make sure you saved and backed up your documents. You also need a way to install an OS, if you intend to do so.

I assume you want to install windows XP on your laptop.
The XP installation disk doesn't contain the SATA drivers needed to operate your harddisk.

There are two different aproaches to solve this kind of issue.
First: (very simple, works only sometimes): enter the BIOS setup and find any option related to SATA MODE. Change the current option to something like LEGACY or anyway, to other value than the default one. Try now to do the windows installation again.

Second: (not so simple, but work everytimes): The goal is to create a custom windows installation disk, especially for your laptop. This can be done using a free software called N-LITE.
Using this software + your old windows installation disk + the SATA drivers downloaded from the Gateway support site you will be able to burn a new windows installation disk with the SATA drivers integrated. Keep this new created disk for future use.
If you need help about using N-lite, you can find a lot of examples and tutorial online, but of course you can ask here again about that, I'll be glad to offer further help.

Please let me know if it helped.

Good luck!

Just loaded windows xp on a formated hard drive
go to above website and download your relevant, drivers, in fact download them all, and install and reboot, one by one, that way you have all latest drivers installed, as it is now, you only have Windows Generic drivers for all your things.

My motherboard for my laptap MX6025 was damage, now I am replacing them for a new one and would order via online. How do I install this to my windows xp, what requirements do i need such as drivers,...

If your hard drive is still working fine, you shouldn't need to reinstall Windows again. Most of the time your PC will perform as it did before your motherboard died by simply reinstalling the original hard drive.
If not then do this.
Reinstall windows with your restore CD, and with most gateway laptops you should have a drivers and applications CD that restores your motherboard drivers and applications to their original locations.

If you lost your drivers CD, you can download them all here.

When asked, you should allow XP updates so that Service Pack 3 can install. This will add a few windows based drivers to your laptop that may be necessary for better video, audio and wireless performance.

Your restore CD may not ask for your CD Key, this is typical for a Vendors original restoration, but if for some reason it does, the number on the back of your laptop will work. Mine validated just fine.

There is no such thing as a BIOS virus. However, there are such things are boot sector viruses. Before you reinstall XP again, wipe the hard drive completely by deleting and recreating the primary partition.

Acer aspire 3000

The bootable XP cd you have will work - You need to first reinstall the Operating System(XP), then download and install drivers for the devices(Such as touchpad, wireless, etc.)
The device drivers are all available from Acer's support site; If the Network Card driver isn't installed after the windows XP installation, you will need to use a different computer to download the drivers, and transfer them to your laptop using some sort of removable media - USB Flash drive, portable hard drive, memory card, etc.

Toughbook CF-51 Sound

You can download the XP drivers from the panasonic site. CF-51 got many flavors and be sure that your model numbers are at hand when you retrieve the factory installed drivers.

Delete all SigmaTel drivers from the registry hardware section. This would help reinstall the correct driver. The presence of these wrong registry values prevent successful installation of the factory drivers.

I have installed se7en, vista and XP successfully. The sound is really problematic since Dell and Gateway laptops use similar sound chips and offers drivers on the net... but they don't work at all. The Gateway driver seems to install perfectly from device manager report, but only the mic works & no sound.

What I do is install the factory provided drivers in XP compatible mode and then use windows update to download the latest SigmaTel drivers (se7en pre-beta). Windows got a more compatible driver but it can only install over the original since the chips cannot be recognized.
