Hi..my name is Keith..you can take the battery to like an AutoZone or AdvanceAuto..and they will test the battery for free..it sounds like it has a bad cell in it..also i would look at the battery cable connections to see if they are corroded and make sure the ground wire has a clean connection to the frame..if this didnt help..please write me back

Why would a person need to jump start a battery on a john deere stx 38 to start it,if the battery is good ?

You have indicated a bad battery. There is enough charge in the battery to start and run buy not enough when you engage the blades. Check the battery by load testing it and checking with a multi-meter.

Mower runs new battery down then wont start again unless jumped.

Sounds like you have a problem with a regulator. Hard to tell without knowing what model of mower you own. You must remember that whatever is attached to your battery charges it while the motor is running. If the battery does not receive that needed charge, running the motor will certainly drain your battery.

Hi, if your battery wont charge you will need to replace it and when you do you need to check that the mower is charging by checking the battery voltage with a multimeter while the mower is running. It should be around 14 volts. Regards Phil.

White smoke coming out of mower

It sounds as though you are losing power (electrical power); see if charging the battery fully allows it to run longer or if charging the battery helps.

Tractor will start when jumped but will shut off when jumper cables are removed

Sounds like there is no charge going to the battery. First check any fuses on the machine then try this if you can't get hold of a test meter to check input voltage to the battery, Remove and fully charge the battery, refit it and then start thr mower. It should run fine for quite a while till the charge gets too low to support your ignition system. If this works out, the problem is in the generator circuit and requires futher investigation.

What method are you jump starting? Are you putting clamps from jump battery on the posts of the battery or grounding the jump battery and then touching the + cable to the starter terminal?

Check the seat switch for the running problem. Disconnect the switch and jump the harness with a piece of wire, and see if the tractor stays running. If so, then the switch is bad. As for the charging problem. Test the voltage regulator. Start the tractor and put a volt meter across the battery. Red to red and black to black. Run the RPM to full throttle. You should have a reading of 14 to 14.5 volts. If not, the regulator is bad. Hope this helps.
