Dear ...u need to rate me for this ok ....

actually i want to ask u that when you are doing white balance is your camcorder in recording mode ?
if, yes then dear camcorder will not take white balance in recording mode .. make itin stand by mode and then do white balance by keeping a white paper in front of the camcorder at least two meter away ok.

I am new to gimp and most of the instructions I have found on YouTube do not give enough detail or move too fast to follow. I need to clean up the white background of a scanned black & white line...

There is various ways to achieve this.
The quickest way is just to adjust the levels - Go to the menu marked IMAGE then hover over ADJUSTMENTS and to the right should be another menu, containing various options such as LEVELS and CURVES
The easiest option is probably altering the BRIGHTNESS-CONTRAST. (Just up the contrast and up the brightness slowly and you should be able to see the impact on the image). More complex/precise options are available with LEVELS and CURVES. Both are pretty self-explanatory - just play around with the arrows on LEVELS and you will see the image alter. Or on curves, just click on the curve and drag to change the shape/add points.
For high precision, the simplest would be to select a paintbrush from the toolbox and the colour white and just paint over the areas you don't need.

White balence

The EOS Rebel K2 is a film camera. White balance settings on digital cameras are an electronic 'adjustment' to the image sensor. In film cameras, the film is the image sensor. So white balance is dependent partially on the film you're using, but more often on the filters you add to the lens to correct for various lighting conditions and light sources.
