My laptop freezes with jagged diag lines showing on the monitor

I'm running an Acer Aspire 5520 laptop and it just recently started to freeze up with the monitor showing only diagonal jagged lines mostly gray but some are colored. I have to hold the power button to shut down and reboot. I sometimes have to do this twice to restore it, What can be causing this? THANKS!

Thank you. I did that but won't know if it works for a week or so as the problem wasn't daily. Thanks again.

After about 5-8 minutes everything freezes, mouse, can't even use ctrl, alt delete, what to do? Do I have a virus?

Are you using vista? If so beware MS updates. Also keep a close eye on the temp. of your laptop. That model Acer aspire 5520, is known to have an overheating problem and /or cold solder joints on the motherboard under cpu block and the video chip. I can't say if you do or don't have a virus, but if when you turn on, and the laptop starts cycling thru on, then off non stop, you will need to research reflowing solder with that model. I have repaired 2 units with that issue.Run malware bytes antimalware, SuperAntiSpyware and Spybot S & D and see what they say.

Laptop freezing acer aspire 5520

If you are carrying it around, and you are getting black lines across the screen, you have a lot more than thermal pads to be concerned with. The connections inside are breaking down and arcing. (That's what the ssszzzzzzzZZZTTT noise is).. Unless you are good at repairing printed circuit boards, you should take it to a repair shop.

Acer Aspire one 205 freezes after re-booting

Do you mean the desktop is shown and then it freezes-meaning the things (folders etc) doesn't load? If so, you can try the CTRL+SHIFT+ESC button to show task manager where u can open run and type explorer to show the desktop folders and icons. But, this is caused by virus so be sure to clear it off.
