Question about Refrigerators

Refrigerator not cold enough(65*)

Fridge side suddenly only cools to 65*. Freezer side makes ice but ice cream is soft. It's a Kenmore side by side (15yrs old) Are there any simple inexpensive fixes as due to it's age I'm reluctant to sink much money into it. It seems to be staying constant at these temps. Thanks in advance

I have defrosted the coils and recently restarted the unit. Should it come back up to the proper temperatures shall I assume it is indeed one of these defrosting problems(thermostat, heater or timer)? Thanks

OK I've replaced the def.heating units(one definitely looked burnt out) and the thermostat. Tried to replace the control unit but the fridge wouldn't start up. Put the old control unit back in and it is cooling down now, as we speak. I will check to make sure the control unit replacement is identical. The replacement numbers have changed in a minor way in 15 yrs.

I replaced the two def. heaters and thermostat and the fridge and freezer are both working better that ever. Cost under $75 for all the parts and saved having to shell out $1500 or so for a new one, at least for awhile. Thanks Woodchuck

If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

If the ice build up was the problem it will cool back down to where it should and stay that way for several days or even over a week till the frost builds back up.

Why is my freezer not cold enough?

Check the freezer door seal is not leaky. Look for signs of moisture condensation along the door. Apply a thin film of Vaseline along door frame. This will make door seal stick better.

Also check there is no ice building up in freezer. This is a self defrosting fridge and built up of ice inside means warmer temperature. Lower the use of ice cubes from the ice maker to reduce load on compressor as this can effect freezer temperature.

Check freezer is not full of too many items causing reduction of air flow and hence reducing cooling effectiveness.

Please check the timer the thermostat and the heater for the auto defrosting to work. Switch off the fridge and after all the frost has gone off switch on to see if the sooling returns . If so you can be sure that the timerr does not work and so reduces cooling on frosting. If there is still no cooling then you will need to check onthe compressor and the gas pressure. Get help to confirm and take an estimate before attempting, get an warranty assurance for work. Hope you try out and see first.Good day

Remove the bottom snap in grille and vacuum out the dirt and dust from the coil and anything else you can reach. You may need to make an extension with paper towel tubes flattened a little and tape to get into the cramped spaces. I use a piece of clear plastic pipe stuck in the suction with a long angled split cut on the cleaning end. Maybe also move the fridge out, vacuum and clean the flooring area also. (And every 6 months)

Ice cream and Cool Whip are soft but ham/chicken are hard

Freezer is not cold enough probably holding about 20 degrees. Try setting your temperature up for the freezer if that doesn't help you may have a problem that needs service.

Freezer too cold--refrigerator too warm

If the cold control is not adjusting the temp when you move it, that can be part of the problem.

Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

Freezer is cold but not keeping icecream frozen.

If, the fresh food section is 34- 38 degrees, then the freezer should be cold enough to keep ice cream solid. All of the cooling capability comes from the freezer section. I, personally, would not waste time or money on a ten year old box. Ten years ago it cost $1000, so, the outlay is $100 per year. Dump the old refrigerator and get a new one.
