Zoom goes into automatic pilot

When I turn the camera on it immediately tries to go into full zoom. I can stop and reverse it by backing off the slider to wide angle but as soon as I let this go it just begins zooming in again. The problem is intermittent in that sometimes it works properly but the fault is getting more and more frequent. Also it has just started doing the same thing on playback - a small square appears on the screen and the camera starts zooming in on the playback picture.

Re: Zoom goes into automatic pilot

The problem that you are experiencing is a common complaint on the Canon Gl2 camcorder. There are two different common parts that can cause zoom problems. One is that the zoom control on the side grip goes faulty and will need to be replaced, this repair parts and labor is $199. The second problem is a bad flex PCB and this repair parts and labor is $306. Both of these repairs include cleaning and servicing. The return shipping is free. We also guarantee the entire camcorder for 6 months parts and labor. If you have any other questions please feel free to call, email or post you questions here.

Turn on the unit and goes to full zoom. Back it off manually, it will immediately return to full zoom. Unit was bought new about 6 years ago.

My camera did the turned out to be a sticking zoom switch. With the camera turned OFF... move the zoom button ON TOP ( above the view finder) of the camera to the left and right about 20 or 30 times... then turn the camera on and try it.... very simple... but it worked for me :o)

JVC GR-DF470AA continually zooms in automatically even when not pressing zoom. Its like the zoom button is stuck on zoom. To stop the zoom I have to press the zoom out.

This sounds like a physical problem with the switch, but you will have to disassemble it to see what's going on. There are videos on utube that demonstrate the process, if you elect to try that. If you elect to have it serviced, get an estimate first, as they can be fairly expensive to fix. Wish I had better news.

My VX 1000 constantly goes to full zoom, how can I stop it zooming?

Sometimes these can be cleaned, other times they have to replace the zoom switch block . I have a $40 min diagnostic fee on these. The lowest I have seen. I'd love to have a look at it. Larry's Electronics 916-362-8708

Cannon MVX3000i goes into auto zoom

had an issue like that with my GL2 at an older stage. Ended up the dimmers and light combination would emit IR that confussed the camera into thinking I was using the remote control to zoom it... if it has an external (not in the lens) pickup you might try covering the IR reciever on the camera with dark tape (if you use masking tape or electrical tape, take it off after you are done as to not leave goop all over your camera)... a post it might work well. Otherwise look in the setup and turn off the remote if possible.... Just one possibility....

HF10 zoom goes without any explicit request

My HF10 started to mysteriously autozoom as well, and I had made no setup changes. I don't have exactly the same symptoms as you describe except that it would begin to zoom when I didn't want it to. I noticed the [I.AF] (Instant AutoFocus) icon, so I went into the menu (Camera Setup - AF Mode) and turned the "Instant AF" to "Normal AF". After that, the autozoom seemed to have stopped. I set it back to "Instant AF" and it did not autozoom again. I wouldn't know how to turn the autozoom back on again even if I wanted to, but thankfully it appears to be gone now. Hopefully it will stay in manual zoom mode. Hope that helps.

What is the exact model number of your Sony camcorder? Seems its tele/wide switch is bad and requires replacement.

Zoom malfunction

I had exactly the same problem. You just need to smash once with your hand on the bottom of your camera (it looks that this works for all canon cameras).

Zoom problem

I have the same problem. I hoped it was down to the zoom button on the top of the camera. I dismantled it and eventually got to the button but couldn't find anything loose/damaged or needing cleaned.

Did you ever find a solution?

Zoom malfunction

the zoom control button is malfunctioning. try to clean the contact. check the resistant of the variable carbon. if it is not open, try to adjust the contact point away from the damaged area.
