Blades will not disengage on lawn tractor

I can't remember my model #, but I cannot get the blades to disengage. I have removed my deck and check all belts, wheels and pulleys, which all seemed fine. When I reinstalled the deck, it was better, but the blades still would not shut off.

The model# of my Craftsman Lawn Tractor is 917.272246, it is a 20hp, 48" mower. My blades will not disengage. I replaced my PTO switch and that didn't help. I have also cleaned my deck so that it is spotless and that didn't help. I tried to attach a scanned image of my deck from the manual, but can't.

Your cable clutch is not engaging properly. Try to lubricate it with some grease. This will get the cable to slide. If that does not help, it will need to be replace.

I know from experience that v belts ordered for your rider mower will come in different lengths. One belt was so tight it couldn't even fit over the final pulley. I would recommend you order your v belt from the authorized factory dealer because the substitute belts seem to be joke at being the correct length and width.

Your blades engage with a cable and the cable somewhere is bunched up. You will probably need a new cable.

Why will blades will not disengage?

check your return spring on the deck. it goes from hole in bracket welded to deck to hole in moving lever that one of the deck pulleys is attached to. if spring is missing or broke, it will not dissengage or may dissengage slowly. If spring is there, the moving lever may have debris under it or may be bent. If spring is there, remove deck and try pushing the pully with the spring to see if it breaks free.

Where is the safety switch to engage the blade

Your lawn tractor will have a lever that raises and lowers the mower deck which houses the two cutting blades. By lowering your mower deck to the desired cutting height, the blades should automatically engage. By raising the deck back to it's highest position, the blades will automatically disengage. Should be simple enough. You can consult your mower manual. If you don't have one, you can easily find it online using the make, model and year of the lawn tractor.

Cutting blades won't disengage

Check you blades to see if one is bent. Do this with the mower NOT RUNNING and the KEY OUT of THE IGNITION! Look under the deck to see if one is bent. This will cause the wobble. As far as no disengaging your electric clutch could be bad. The bearing could have seized up.

Craftsman 42" mower deck won't disengage

Try pulling on the cable coming down to deck. This cable might be your problem. Also check that the spring on the end of this cable is present and functional.
