How to add a new harddisk to a Gateway Peninum 3 550MHz machine and install win98?

Do you want to replaced the main HD or add a new one? If you want to replace the main one, buy a Hard drive under 160 gigs. I cant remember but 98 can not deal with a bigger one, you will have to cut it up or Partition it. Partition it down to 20 gig each. Do you have your Org. win 98 install disk? Get a setup program with the HD you buy. That program should let you Partition it and also format it to use with 98 or fat32. Once installed in the computer set the HD to master with switches located on the drive (small jumpers) As it boots up look for press DEL to enter setup. Get into the BIOS program and ck to see it it will locate your new hard drive you might have to set heads and scetors so make a note of the stamped on the drive. Once the BIOS has found the drive it is a matter of format w/ copy the command comm program from win98 you will have to have a good win 98 set up disk. Once you have formated the drive with fat32 and copied you will need to install CD/Rom drivers you might have to find a good old win98 starup disk to boot up the cd. you might find a good old floppy with a cd intall on it at a local computer shop. if using an old win98 startup disk you can then put in the cd and at the Prompt type in cd win98 then type in  setup and that should be a good start.

Just bought a laptop cheap as on trade me for extra battery was told that it was broken but fired it up and works but is asking me for a user name and password to log on to windows. can i over ride it or...

keep the laptop, hope it got a working cd-rom/dvd-drive !(if not, take-out /replace the harddisk)
-win xp has to be removed from harddisk,
the hd must be formatted so you got a blank hd to set up your new system

you'll need :
- antoher PC with internet connection and cd/dvd-burner
- a win98 installation cd or bootable savecopy of it,
- a new win-xp install cd plus cd-key
- a program called PC Wizard(download)
and a bit of time...(one night or two:-)

follow instructions:

if you can enter bios (press F1 or F2 or Del)
during booting), youre lucky...

enter bios while booting, in the menu look for boot otions or devices, change order of boot devices, so that cd/dvd-drive is 1st, then save and exit (F10)
insert win98-CD, boot from cd, try to setup win98, you'll be asked to erase/ format all data/installations/partitions
on the harddisk (drive c:,probably), do so, format the drive using the FAT32-file system,
then end installation without fully setting up win 98.
now you should have a blank disk witout any operation system on it.

now put in win xp cd, go through the whole installation process
install and run pc wizard(it'll tell you all hardware devices of the laptop)
get the proper drivers for the notebook for win-xp from the net(google might be helpful)
install them.
happy computing!

if all this did not work, remove the harddisk,(you'll have to unscrew a lot of the laptop)
replace it by a new s-ata ide-drive()and..
erh.. come again then, this is a long process as well

I need to reinstall windows on packard bell imedia 5106

Because you have a packard bell, I would assume this is a much older system.  You would have to put Windows 98 on it I presume unless you have enough memory to do XP.  Either way you will need one of the Windows CDs to load the software... I ve seen Win98 on Ebay for $50. Once you have the software, you will need a boot disk.. You can download this off the Internet.  What this boot disk does, is it loads the utilities that you need like to format the hard drive and it will also load the cd rom drivers so you can use your cd rom and install windows from the cd... Load the boot disk and once its loaded you can use the format command.  At the C Prompt, type     format C:     It will erase the Hard Drive. Once completed,  Reboot the computer with the boot disk still in. When it gets done you can install Windows. Most times it will assign the cd rom drive a letter. Usually D or E.   When it comes up type    E:\Setup This should start your install.                                                              Joe < Data Miner >

Are you trying to upgrade 95 to 98SE or just new install of 98.
What you may have to do is
  1. insert win 98 boot floppy
  2. boot with cdrom support
  3. at the prompt change to cd drive E:\ (press enter)
  4. at the E:\ prompt type cd Win98 (press enter)
  5. at the E:\Win98 prompt type format C:\ (press enter)
  6. confirm all data will be erased
  7. reboot with floppy in and at the a:\ prompt run FDISK to see if the full size of the hard drive is available. (option 4)
  8. If everything is normal exit fdisk reboot with floppy, choose with cdrom support, type in the cdrom drive letter (usually e) and cd Win98(change directory Win98)
  9. at the win98 prompt type setup (press enter) and follow the prompts.

How to install os

This is a little difficult but it can B done :) Firstly I dunno if ya need to re-format ya drive? perhaps first ya could try to "Repair" of Win98? If that doesn't work, then, perhaps ya may have to re-format. If the Win98 is on a SEPARATE drive or Partition this also makes a difference.... Basically ... repair/re-install win98, then do a repair of ya Boot menu for XP, as Win98 sets up an incorrect Boot up for XP, and thus must be "Fixed" so XP will boot & show a Dual boot menu.. here are some links to help you step by step...
