Question about Craftsman 20 hp 42 in. Deck Lawn Tractor - CA Model
I can't get the 1st and reverse to engage on my Craftsman 20 hp 1997 lawn tractor. I can hear it grind slightly when I put force on the shifter.
Transmission and shifting problems are tricky. from the limited information given, i'll go on assumptions - if this is a hydrostatic transmission, your brake is stuck, it will need to be adjusted - if it is a six speed, several factors come into play. if it will shift okay with the engine OFF, but not with it running, you have a belt problem. has the belt been replaced recently? is it the correct belt? is the belt routed correctly? if none of the above, check the belt guides to make sure that a stick or something hasn't poked up there and bent them. their purpose is to make the belt "blossom" away from the engine pulley so there is no tension on the belt at the transmission. if it won't shift with engine off, the shift shaft in the trans is probably rusted and sticking.
