Question about HP LaserJet 2430n Printer

1 Answer

How to change the default tray on a HP 2430?

We have a HP 2430 printer that we use to print document from MS Windows environment and from a linux application (BaaN IV). The tray 2, contains letterhead paper, the tray 3 contains plain A4 paper. Normally, all the documents coming from BaaN are printed on the tray 3 (default tray?). However, since yesterday, all the documents coming from BaaN are printed on the tray 2. I'm suspecting that some setup were changed on the printer but I'm unable to changed it back. How can we define a default tray on that printer?
Thanks for your help

How to get accurate answer in double-quick time.

You can tell whether a man is clever by his answers. You can tell whether a man is wise by his questions. (Naguib, Mahfouz)

For an accurate solution in double-quick time, ask your computer related questions indicating the operating system, version, the make and model of your device.
It would be helpful to indicate the operating system of the computer while asking a printer problem.

Detailed question causes quick and accurate response. This Tip applies for all kind of Questions not only for Printers.

If you ask one unclear question such as "My printer is not working, why?", an expert or repairman has to ask many to give you the correct answer or to fix the device.

"Troubleshooting", "Finding quick solutions" and "Repairing on time" depends on "Wise questions" and "Explanations" of the problem.

The 3 Simple Steps of asking wise questions related to the computer hardware, software and computer peripheral are listed below:

STEP 1. Write the device name, model, etc which you faced problem with in detail such as HP Deskjet 1660 Printer, emachines EZ 1601-01 All in one, Mac Book Pro, etc.

STEP 2. Write the environment which the device is currently working with such as Windows XP SP2 Operating System, Mac OS X Snow Leopard, Linux, etc.

STEP 3. Write the problem that you faced clearly but do not forget to explain some extras which should be used as clue to find the problem easily such as "Printer is not printing the MS Document on A3 paper, but prints on A4 paper".

Please find some possible questions and answers which you may meet below:

Example 1:

PROBLEM : You didn't manage to print a document in HP Deskjet 1660 Printer, it prints strange characters.

You may ask a question to solve this problem in different ways and the expert's first solution may be very different depends on that question, such as:

Your Question a) My printer doesn't print.
Expert's First Solution a) Plug in the printer, check the cable connection, etc.

Your Question b) My printer HP Deskjet 1660 doesn't print.
Expert's First Solution b) Install the printer driver, etc.

Your Question c) My printer HP Deskjet 1660 doesn't print and the operating system is MS Windows 7.
Expert's First Solution c) Install the printer driver which is compatible with the MS Windows 7, etc.

SOLUTION : You should install the right driver for your Operating System MS Windows 7.

The expert asks you many questions to find the exact problem and its solution if you ask as in (a) and (b). But (c) may be the clever question for this problem.

Example 2:

PROBLEM : You didn't manage to print the MS Word Document in A3 sized paper.

You may ask a question to solve this problem in different ways and the expert's first solution may be very different depends on that question, such as:

Your Question a) My printer doesn't print.
Expert's First Solution a) The printer driver needs to be installed or there is a cable connection problem, etc.

Your Question b) My printer doesn't print in black and white but prints in color.
Expert's First Solution b) The black ink cartridge may be empty and needs to be replaced or the print heads need to be cleaned, etc.

Your Question c) Printer prints photos, email attachments but can not print a document written in MS Word which I saved as ".rtf" document format.
Expert's First Solution c) The MS Word Software installation problem or the document may be corrupted, etc.

Your Question d) My printer prints other documents but can not print out only one document to an A3 paper.
Expert's First Solution d) Make sure the paper is loaded correctly, check the paper tray and paper size from the print menu while printing, etc.

SOLUTION : You didn't load A3 sized paper tray before printing. Load that paper tray.

The expert asks you many questions to find the exact problem and its solution if you ask as in (a), (b) and (c). But (d) may be the clever question for this problem.

The user cannot select a paper tray for a print job from within an application. It is also not possible to configure a default paper tray in the Document Defaults, Printing Preferences, Printing Defaults driver options.
This problem may be experienced with an HP PCL5e, PCL5c, or PCL6 LaserJet printer driver on any of the following Operating Systems:
  • Windows NT 4.0
  • Windows 2000
  • Windows XP/.NET

Typical symptoms of this issues include:
  • Paper tray selection grayed out.
  • Cannot select paper tray, only size and type.
  • Not possible to select tray.

SOLUTION: Perform the following steps to clear the NT Forms configuration.
  1. Go to the Printers folder by clicking Start , Settings , and Printers .
  2. Right-click the printer and go to Properties .
  3. Go to the NT Forms tab.
  4. Click the Clear All button.
  5. To save and exit, click the OK button.

SUMMARY: This is expected printer driver behavior. The NT Forms feature allows a user or system administrator to configure a so-called "form-to-tray assignment" for the printer. When this feature is enabled it is not possible to select a specific paper tray for a print job, or to set it as default, because the system is aware of the specific paper size and type loaded in the various printer trays, which makes the source selection redundant. Some applications or environments may require a "form-to-tray assignment" in order to take advantage of certain features. For instance, in an Active Directory environment, this feature has to be enabled for the operating system to be able to report the available paper sizes in the printer to the Active Directory

HP 2420d... When I "print" I have to hit the "check" button two or three times to have the document printed out... Before I "print" LCD shows "Ready" Once I hit "print" LCD show "Load Tray 1 Plain Paper...

The problem could be that you're using Microsoft Windows XP. Microsoft discontinued this program a long time ago and doesn't even offer support for it anymore. The new programs are often too powerful for XP. Before you upgrade your OS, and I suggest you do when you can, go up on the HP website and search how to reset your printer to factory defaults. If you can't find it, just re-download the software for your printer. That should reset your printer to factory defaults.

Im trying to print a document in word thats about 200 pages and i just want to print only 4 of them and whn i print it says it prints in the box but nothing comes out the printer but when i try another...

Alrite now, firstly, since you need only 4 pages of the 200pg document, go to File > Print > Select page range (e.g. 1-4, 51-54, etc)
Then print and make sure you have pages loaded in tray 1.

You can also have papers in tray 2. If MS Word does not respond, then change the drivers to UPD (, the system may have legacy drivers or An earlier version of firmware.

HP Laserjet 5000dn

if you using office go to page setup and select the tray(s) that you want to use for the first page and other pages ( both must be the same ) unless you only want the first page as letter head and the rest on plain paper or something along those lines ?

Also if you go into the properties of the printer and go to advanced and then click on the printing defaults button and see if the options in there are the same or different to whats in printing preferences.

If they are set to tray 1 then it will default to tray 1

Printer only sends paper to tray 1 when printing from procomm...

Sounds like a Procomm issue. Since I am not familiar with Procomm I can help you any further. But here is my analysis: All other application except for Procomm prints to tray 2. That is because all those applications use the setting as configured in your printer properties in Windows. What Procomm seems to be doing is trying to load a special paper from the manual feed tray, that is tray 1. You will have to check with in this Procomm application where you can change the printer properties so you can specify it to use tray 2 as the default. This is all within Procomm and has nothing to do with Windows nor your printer.
