Question about LaCie 3 TB Biggest Quadra External Quad Interface RAID Array 301249U

1 Answer

Lacie Big Disk Quadra 3TB won't work with xp-32bit

I initialised the disk under vista to create 1 2TB partition and the 1 TB partition. I then formatted the 2TB partition to NTFS MBR (because i want to use the drive with xp-32). Then when I took the drive to my xp machine, xp doesn't even see the 2TB partition. So the 3TB drive is effectively useless with my workstation (Dell Precision T7400)... unless someone else can suggest a solution???

One way around is to install Mac Drive on your system. First you format your hdd in HFS+ on a mac platform, with any size you want. Then, after you installed Mac drive on your PC, it will work.

Tecra A11 can't see all of 3TB drive

Support for Disk Drives Beyond 2.2 TeraBytes (TB) and 4K Advanced Format Sectors

Most legacy systems built before 2011 have a traditional PC BIOS. This type of BIOS uses a Master Boot Record (MBR). The MBR Partitions can define a disk drive capacity up to 2.2TB. Windows operating systems that boot from an MBR are therefore limited to 2.2TB per MBR. A 3TB disk drive in a legacy BIOS and Window system will need a DiscWizard device driver to access the full capacity of a 3TB disk drive. Two partitions will be necessary because of the MBR limitation. The device driver mounts the capacity above 2.2TB with another MBR which looks to the system as a second virtual "physical" device.
GUID Partition Tables (GPT) can define drives larger than 2.2TB. You can use GPT today on any Windows 10/ 8.1/8/7 and Vista system as a non-booting data drive. Windows can only boot a GPT partition on a new type of BIOS called UEFI.
UEFI BIOS desktop systems are new since 2011. Windows 10/8/8.1/7 64-bit and Vista 64-bit operating systems support booting from UEFI and GPT without the need of a non-Microsoft device driver. This is the Windows native solution for booting a 3TB drive to a single partition.
Quick facts about Windows and 3TB drives:

  • Windows 10/8/8.1/7 and Vista support GPT 3TB single partitions
  • Windows 10/8/8.1/7 and Vista can only boot GPT on systems with UEFI BIOS
  • Windows 10/8/8.1/7 and Vista can mount a GPT non-booting data drive
  • Intel RST device drivers before v10.1 do not support 3TB disk drives
  • Windows systems with Legacy BIOS and MBR boot drives are limited to 2.2TB partitions
  • Windows XP does not support GPT
  • Windows XP sees a 3TB drive as 800GB on boot or data drives
  • DiscWizard software can install a device driver which opens the full capacity of a 3TB. You can use it to create a second partition for the capacity above 2.2TB

I have a 1TB LaCie 2Big Quadra. It has 2 500GB and runs on RAID 1. I replaced both 500 GB LaCie drives with 1.5 TB LaCie drives, but my computer only recognizes the original 500 GB. I formatted both...

I have the same problem too on my 2big form lacie . If I use 2x 1,5 tera disk in "fast mode" or in "big mode" my disk manager only shows 746 gigs available (it should be at least 2,5 terra).
If I use "safe mode" so my system can see 1,3 tera available, wich is normal for a raid mirror configuration.
I hope to find a solution quickly.

I had 4 LaCie 2TB Big Disk Quadra, Item 301343U. They are connected to a Nitro 8-PORT FIREWIRE 800/1394B PROFESSIONAL (N8PFW8HR) hub. The hub is connected to a LaCie Firewire 800 PCI card. I am running...

Let's not take this as a solution so much as an intuition. I believe you may have run up against a limit of physical disk space that XP can administrate.

DO me a favor and don't give my rating a thrashing if I'm wrong.

4 big quadra 6 TB, win7.0 pro,i can see the unit, format it,etc. but always in raid 0, the unit doesn´t change when i tried to reconfigure it to raid 5, and i have followed the lacie instructions

The hard disk might originally came from a computer with raid 0 configuration that is why no matter what you do to reformat, it will always give you the same drive space as your Raid 0. The solution to your problem is actually deleting the partition first from another computer before formatting.

You will be needing a windows installation disk and you can plugin the big quadra thru the usb cable in another computer. Run the windows installation disk (this could be xp or vista) and when it prompted you to choose a task, just press enter to start windows installation (DO NOT press R to go to recovery console). Next, the system will search of every available partition and will show you the drive partition for your Big Quadra. Select for it and delete the partition from there. After it has been deleted, you can cancel that installation process from that computer and try re-formatting your drive into Raid 5 again as you have been doing before.

Should you have any question, please feel free to ask. Good luck!

I have the same issue

Win XP will not be able to recognize whole 3TB storage drive. You need to use some kind of 3rd party utility and then partition it and format as well.. AS a note win xp size is limited up to 80-100 GB.

Deference Lacie d2 Quadra1TB/Lacie big disk ?

It's all about the interfaces.
The Quadra has four interfaces: • eSATA • FW 400 • FW 800 • USB 2.0
The triple has all but the eSATA interface listed above.
For doing video work you want a big drive with a fast interface. If you have eSATA available then that's the fastest. If you don't then you're just as well off to go with the triple interface. The FW 800 would be the next fastest, then the USB 2.0, then the FW 400.
Because of the way that data is transferred I believe that when doing video work you would be best served by the FW 400 instead of the USB 2.0 even though the USB is faster I don't believe it is a full duplex communication so the FW 400 is actually better for video.
