Is there any chance there is a way I can get the basic software online just to get me back up and running? Without paying a fortune?

  • lamiafl Jul 01, 2009

will that allow me to restore, yet keep all my data? and if so, what are the steps I need to follow?

  • lamiafl Jul 01, 2009

Does it have the program I need? Which is it and how do I go about using it? Also, will it allow me to keep all the data already on my HD??? (Thank you very much for all your help!!!)

When was the last time you were able to use your computer?
Did you installed any software recently in your computer?
Try pressing F8 on startup and use the Last Known Good Configuration. May be that will help.

To start your computer normally you must choose either of that options but the only thing you must choose is the start windows normally so that all the settings from the previous working settings will be applied in your windows start up.

I have a toshiba laptop with the windows vista,

Looks like some of the boot-up files or drivers are lost or corrupted. Your best bet is to re-install the OS. If you do it this way, you may not lose any files:
1) Boot from the OS CD-ROM
2) Choose "install OS" from the CDROM menu
3) Choose the "repair installation" option.
4) follow the instruction on the screen.
5) As soon as the computer boots successfully, open a DOS box screen and type "chkdsk c: /r"; answer "yes" to whatever question you are asked. Then close the DOS box screen and restart

Laptop wont even attempt to load windows??

With this kind of problem, you must put in the Windows software disk and boot. Then select repair Windows from the list. This option will attempt to correct the problem.
If you do not have the disc, boot into the repair / diagnostic mode from the boot screen. See if there is an option to create boot disks.

You need an antivirus program to be installed after installing your operating system. Do it in safe mode. If problem persists let me know.

Same thing happened to me. Looks like your windows install is damaged. My advice, do a fresh install of windows. You won't lose any of your files, but you will have to reinstall most of your software and drivers.
