Question about Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

I have a Magnavox semi automatic turntable Model No. MX 1800. It's playing very softly even when I have the volume all the way up. Not knowing anything about turntables I don't know what's wrong with it. A friend suggested it might be the amplifier? When I got it, it had apparently worked fine a week earlier. Also, if it is the amplifier, or another component, can I fix it myself?

I can't say I totally SOLVED this, but for me I had the same problem until today. I accidentally hit the end of the needle (not the pointed end, but the point that's attached to the casing) on the little metal dot on the side. The volume shot up right when I hit it.
Intrigued, I wiggled the piece. It now plays loudly!
Also, did you open it up and check all the solders/connections see if it's clean?

Tough order. You might want to check with sites of vintage audio gear for parts and manuals if available. Sometimes that sort of gear is also available on ebay. eBayeBay

How do I adjust the triggering position of the automatic switch off and tone arm return on a Harksound (by CEC) HS 210 Semi Automatic turntable?

Hi, at the base of the tonearm you will find a rubber grommet. Remove the grommet and insert a flat blade screwdriver. Adjust screw to the right until arm lands in correct position. Cheers john. Stylus City.

No volume from turntable, even with volume turned to max, are ther internal fuses ?

You don't state which model the turntable is. Without this we are working blind. If the turntable has a built in amp then that will have failed. A blown fuse would shut down everything. If it has no built in amp and you have it connected to a separate amp, then you have either connected it to the wrong socket - it needs a phono socket - or if the amp doesn't have one you need a magnetic cartridge preamp.

Rubber band for Akai semi automatic turntable APX1 needs replacing. Where can I buy one in NZ?

Are you sure you have an Akai APX1? I've never known Akai to make turntables. I think you mean AIWA - yes, there is a MAJOR difference.

For the Aiwa APX1 model, you can purchase the belt HERE.
