How do you know it needed freon, without gauges its hard to know, most people add freon because its not cold and that may not be the problem, in turn they cause more damage to the system, these vans are famous for leaks.check all the fuses, then jump the low preasure cycling switch and see if compressor truns on,youll need to look at the clutch to see it turn, then the next step is to check the lowside and highside preasures,

you may have lost the main drive belt under the hood, serpentine belt} that would explain the hot air coming from vents,is it overheating? look to insure the drive belts on,with engine off. if the drive belts on,you may have a locked engine component, such as altenator, power steering unit, water pump pulley, idler pulley, the only way to tell for sure is to remove the serpentine belt and hand turn each pulley to insure they turn manually. suggest you do that. the burning smell may be coming from your main{serpentine}belt trying to turn on a locked pulley. thank you for choosing fixya.com!
