Question about Apple Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger for Mac

Not much memory left in my powerbook

I want to know how to free up space. My neighbour mentioned "defragging". What is this and how do you do it? I have an external hard drive to which I have started transferring files and then deleting original files. My internal cd burner seems to have had it so I can't burn files to make copies. I would really appreciate some help here...

De-fragmentation does nothing to free up space. It only moves files that have been fragmented across scattered sectors into a file running across contiguous sectors. This speeds up disk read operations and is less stress/wear on the hard drive. To free up space... continue what you're doing. Move all non-essential files to an external drive and uninstall any programs that you don't really need.

You can indeed De-Frag the hard drive on any Mac, it however is not build into the OS and requires a problem. The one I use is TechTool Pro.

Am trying to download a pattern (and tried various patterns I had purchased and kept on my laptop) and message "memory full" keeps appearing even though I have no patterns saved. What's up?

Well I think the first and most obvious solution is deleting unwanted files you don't use and have made redundant whether this be media, documents. pictures films and so on.
you can also do a disc clean up plus a defrag.
its sounds as if you are running out of space.
what windows are you running?
how big is your hard drive.
how much ram have you got?
go and look at the size of your hard drive and see how much space is left on it.
but it does sound like not a lot of space left to download anything.
there is more you can do to free up space but lets start with what I have put.
if its none of the above please let me know.

Low memory problems

Low memory problems could be low virtual (hard disk) memory.
Hard disk maintenance will free up hard disk memory space.
Hard disk maintenance should be carried once a month to make your computer run efficiently. This removes redundant and temporary files, recovers disk space and speed up hard disk access. Disk Cleanup should be done first - Click My Computer - then right click on the C drive then click Properties, then click Disk Cleanup - let it examine the C drive then it will calculate the amount of disk space it will recover, tick all the boxes to recover the maximum disk space and then Click OK and then Yes to perform these actions. If you have a D drive then repeat these steps on this drive too. Next the C drive needs to be Defrag. This process converts fragmented files into continuous files and this speeds up disk access and makes the hard disk not work as hard. Click on Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disk Defragmenter - click to highlight the C drive and click Analyse - then click Defragment. When this is completed repeat these steps for the D Drive if you have a D drive. Disk Cleanup and Defrag can take a long time to complete, especially if these tasks have not been for a long time.

Not enough memory

If you have low memory (RAM) then install more RAM.

I keep getting a note teling me that I have Low Disc Space on my Local Disc (D) - 4.87MB free of 119 GB. How do I free up this space. When using it's solution it just empies my Recycle Bin but this doesn't...

I would download and run the registry utility from iobit.com
It is freeware and works then run CHKDSK/F.

Within iobits programme are useful utilities that empty the temporary directories and can remove unwanted old files.
Hope that helps.

My aspire one keeps saying 0 memory space left, and wont run certain programs.Tryed to restore to factory settings by pressing f10 button but this doesnt work

Hi

I think to restore your aspire one back to factory settings i believe you have to do this

BUT BEFORE YOU DO THIS

Make sure that you save all your photo's or files etc either to a disk or pendrive or your d drive if you hard drive is split
because back to factory settings is good
but it is exactly back to factory settings with nothing that you have put on it
everything that you put or left on the c.drive will be erased
that is why i said save anything that you want or need saving

But it also sounds a little like the fact that you may have a memory issue
or that your hard drive has too much on it and not enough free space left to run other programes

one needs to have about 10 gig of free space on the hard drive in order for things to run smoothly

so it may pay you to remove some of the stuff that you may have stored on the c drive
or remove some of the programes if you dont use them all
and do a defrag this may help to give you more space

to do a defrag

go to
start
all programes
accessories
system tools
go over and down to defragmenter
click on it and defrag the laptop and if its the ist time you have done it
wait quite a long time in fact ist time could take anywhere from 45 mins up to 2/3 hrs
also it may pay you to right click the defrag link and send it to or copy it to your desktop so that you can defrag say once a month to help things run smoothly

To go back to factory settings
go to your start tab bottom left of your screen
then go to all properties
go over and down to acer empowering technology
then acer erocovery management
click on the erocovery management
and following the onscreen instructions

good luck
hope this sorts things out for you
please let us know if fixya has fixed it for ya

When I try to defrag my hard drive, I get a message which says "disk defragmenter could not open".

Possible Solutions:
1. Turn page file on.

Turning the page file on is a relatively simple process. Begin by selecting Start and right-clicking My Computer. Choose Properties and then press the Advanced tab. Next, choose the Settings button that is located in the Performance area; choose the Advanced tab in this area, and then press the Change button that is found in the Virtual Memory area. There will be a choice called System Managed Size in the Virtual Memory area, select it, press Set (this one is important), and then choose OK. The final move is the most important one; at this point you need to restart the PC. After you finish following these directions Disk Defragmenter should be available to do its magic.

2. Re-register the defragmenters snap-in files

It is possible that you install a third-party defragmenter like Diskeeper, then on uninstalling, it does not restore the built-in one correctly. Open Command Prompt (good ol' DOS) by clicking Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt. At the command prompt type,
cd \windows\system32And then register the defrag components, by typing:
regsvr32 dfrgsnap.dll
regsvr32 dfrgui.dll

At this stage, you may find the disc defragmenter works. If not, there is one more step you can do.

Using Windows Explorer browse to your windows\inf folder.
In there you will find a file called dfrg.inf right click this file, and select Install.

3. Check if you have enough free space on the drive you want to defrag. It should have at least 15% free space.
A volume must have at least 15% free space for defrag to completely and adequately defragment it. Defrag uses this space as a sorting area for file fragments. If a volume has less than 15% free space, defrag will only partially defragment it. To increase the free space on a volume, delete unneeded files or move them to another disk.

4. Run CHKDSK on the volume first before defragmenting.
To run chkdsk on a volume (partition, disk), go to Windows Explorer (not to be confused with Internet Explorer) -> right click the partition -> Properties -> Tools tab -> Check now -> place check marks as required -> Start

5. Check if you have the appropriate services running.

Start > run > services.msc [enter]

Browse down to these services and see if appropriate settings was set.
Logical disk manager - automatic
Logical disk manager administrative service - manual or automatic
Defrag with XP also needs the DCOM Server Process Launcher service running.

6. Your computer might have spyware or malware. Some viruses/malware are known to interrupt/disable system tools such as disc defragmenter. Try to download and run No Adware (download here), an anti-spyware and adware tool. You can also use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware tool or Smitfraudfix (how to use smitfraudfix?) to remove spywares or malwares that are running on your system.

7. Install and run third-party disk defragmenting software.

8. If all of the above possible solutions fail. I'm afraid you need to repair install your OS or as a last resort, reformat your computer (but yeah, I know, nobody want to do that just because of disk defragmenter).

Well, there are a lot of reasons that can consequently cause the issues on your Mac. Meanwhile, there are certain ways through which you can do to fix one by one. However, if you prefer a more efficient way to resolve, try the all-in-one Mac speed up software as it can help resolve all issues in just a few clicks.

During gamplay halo will slow down after 2 to 5 minutes it will go back to normal

awigle

In regards to your game slowing down most likely you are running into a resource/preformance issue on your computer.

First thing I would do is clear all your temp files. Your can do this by right clicking on my computer and then selecting properties.
Next click on Disk Cleanup. In Disk Cleanup make sure that all the check box are check except "Compress old file" (You can do this later if you want. Plus it can take as long as a defrag). Next click on OK, now all the temp files are getting removed.
Next go to the Tools tab and click on Defragment now and left click on Defragment button to defrag you computer. Note if you get an alert that you have less than 15% of free space on your drive this may point to the fact you do not have enough free space on the have drive for the virual memory to run properly. This too could be causing the game slow downs. If this is the case you will want to look at deleting unused games and programs from your system to free up some space.

After the defrag runs then you can go back and run "Compress old file" in disk cleanup. Note if you did uninstall any programs it will be a good idea to go back and rerun the defrag again to cleanup an fragmented files on the system.

Now at this point if you still have trouble you will want to look at your memory. If you have Windows XP you will need atleast 1gig of ram and if you have Vista or 7 you will need 2gigs of ram.

Hope this helps

Low disk space

sounds like the additional memory is not recognized, but the low disk space refers to your hard drive. Either delete some files and defrag or upgrade your hard drive.

To slow

Computer slowdowns have several factors.

How much memory do you have?

If its 256 or below, try adding or upgrading it to 512 mb or more. Having insufficient memory causes your computer to take some space of your hard disk as a substitute, which is a lot slower than the memory ram.

Also check how much space is available on your hard disk. About 15% of the hard disk space must be freed to prevent slowdown.

Use the Disk Cleanup tool to clean some unneeded files. Go to My Computer, then right-click the drive you want to clean up, then click Properties, and click Disk Cleanup.

Try also to defrag your files to lessen the time for the access arm of your hard disk to search/read a file. To defrag your hard disk (or other storage device), go to My Computer, then right-click the drive you want to defrag, click on Properties, then tools, and click Deframent now. Analyze first so you will know if you should defrag the volume, then defrag if necessary. Do this every month to prevent too much fragmentation of files.

Scan for virus and spyware, becuase most of them take hard disk space, memory and have high CPU usage, thus making your system slow even there is no program running. For free anti virus, try AVG. For anti-spyware, try SpyBot S&D.

Also make sure that your computer is properly ventilated. Heat could also limit the performance of your computer.
