When I try to turn my stereo on it lights up for 5 secs then puts POWEROFF on the screen and turns off. Any ideas what is wrong no one else seems to be able to tell me.
Most likely it is going into a safe mode as one of the speaker connections might be creating a short in the audio amplifier. Check speaker terminals connections. The model number of the unit would be helpful to know.
Thanks the model of this unit is 120wx5 Ihave tried to disconect all speakers to see if these are the problem but
Still the same problem
I think your unit is VXS-D512. The characters you provided in your comment is only a part of the model saying it has 5 120Watt speakers. Please remove all speaker connections and turn on the unit. Check if it still powers off. Also check if any messages pop up on the display before it shuts off.
Sorry I read the wrong number. you are correct it is a VSX-D510. I have removed all speaker connections and the message still pops up and then in shuts off.
Not a problem. For your model there are two checks that take place at power on - a DC power check and Speaker Overload check. If either or both of this fail the power on sequence aborts. We need to reconfirm if the cause is the speaker or the DC power. You have taken off the speaker but problem is there so I suspect DC power supply malfunction. This is the supply to the electronics in the system. But to reconfirm you need to isolate the speaker circuit totally. This can be done by inserting a headphone into the headphone jack. Please check if that makes a difference. In any case you will have to visit a technician to fix the DC power problem or speaker circuit problem. By the way what is the message that pops up.

I found the solution for me! I had the problem where after 1-5 seconds, my receiver would simply shut down. Twice now I've solved it.
The problem is most likely that you have speaker wire that is touching the opposite terminal or coming close to doing so. Check all your speaker wire terminals and make sure that they are not touching at all or coming close.
Also, make sure that your speaker wires are truly in speakers. If you have speakers plugged into the back of your receiver and then sitting out on the other end, that could be the problem as well.
I hope that helps - it solved it for me!
