Question about Sony Handycam DCR-TRV320 Digital Camcorder

Firewire Port not working

Have tried hooking my DCR-TRV320 up to three different computers with the Firewire port. It appears that the port is dead. I can use the other ports including the S-Video no problem. Just the Firewire gets no response. Any suggestions?
Thank you,

Had a Sony DCR-TRV355 for nearly 3 years when the firewire port stopped working. Sony want $680 to fix the problem. (The camera cost me $600 with bonuses.) Thought I got lucky when I bought a second hand model TRV-330 for $250 which looked like it had hardly been used. Used it to tranfer my tapes to the PC via firewire, about 10 times and suddenly the firewire port on this camera stopped working. Have run several tests and it is definitely the firewire. Looks like Sony had a dud lot of firewire ports on the early cameras. Unfortunately, they no longer make digi 8 cameras and I have no way of transferring my tape in DV-AVI format to my computer. Does anyone know of a way to fix these cameras myself? If there is a manufacturing fault there is no point me buying another second hand camera. They don't come with warranties. Can anyone suggest anything.

Hi, I have sony DCR-HC28E camcoder. How I can connect this camcoder to my system? please reply me koranne16@yahoo.com

Hook it up to a Firewire (i.Link or IEEE 1394A) port. If you don't have one on your computer, then consider buying one. Most video editing software have a "Capture" mode, and work with all Firewire devices, without additional drivers or other software.

Firewire is the cheapest and cleanest interface. Otherwise you have to resort to video capture devices (both USB and expansion cards). USB capture devices have a wide range of capture quality. Expansion cards will be more expensive than Firewire cards, although more versatile since you can also hook up VCR's and and other video devices. Both tend to need more powerful computers, since video conversion is very compute intensive.

Hi im trying to transfer 8mm tapes to my computer?i have down loaded new software but when i hook up computer says it cant locate i,link cable?i have hooked up provided usb cable but it wont reconize it?

This type of camera usually downloads better with a Firewire (Sony call this i.Link) connection. Some mini-DV and D8 cameras only use the USB connection (if they have one) for stills and can ONLY download video by Firewire. This is because you have to play the tape into the computer, not just copy a file. The DCR-TRV265E definately has to use Firewire.

Most PCs have a USB port, but no Firewire port. Macs often have a Firewire port but may not have USB. As most Windows PCs do not come with this interface, you might need to fit an add-on Firewire interface card. This will come with a driver for the card.

Suitable Firewire (DV) cables can easily be found on Amazon or eBay. You will need the kind with a small (four pin) connector at one end and a larger (six pin) connector at the other. My camera came with the correct lead.

There is a Sony tutorial page for downloading video to computer at THIS LINK You will need to select Windows as the operating system, then Digital8 as the camera type, then select the type of connection. As you will see, the USB option warns that it won't work with many cameras, and you are strongly recommended to use i.Link (which everyone else calls Firewire).

DCR-HC52 fire wire port doesn't work. Have tried on several computer, none of them even see the camera. Best Buy tried using a different cable same results

This happens only mostly if you connect camera on Firewire AFTER you been PC okay, so plug your camera in the Firewire sockets then put your PC on, then the PC will open the firewire port up for use and set up a user port adrs for the port.

You need a FireWire cable and a computer with FireWire port. I have same camara - it comes with a base unit into which you have to plug in the camara. From that base unit connect the firewire cable (4pin) and take that to your computer which may have a firewire port (either 6pin or 4 pin) - depending on what kind of firewire port you have on the computer, you have to get appropriate cable ... it is my understanding that the camara doesn't come with this cable. I purchased a firewire cable with 4 pin connecter on both ends to connect to my IBM laptop with Vista on it. It works great after all this setups. It does not work with a USB cable for some reason.

Firewire port damaged

Take a magnifying glass to the firewire port on the camera. Check to see if it looks damaged at all. Sometimes the port has become disengaged from the internal component. Sometimes it's simply damaged because the cable was inserted improperly. They are not very rugged. In my opinion, you followed perfect troubleshooting techniques. Time to send it in for an estimate.
