Sounds like a dirty laser but more likely a weak or dead laser.
or the spindle motor is out if you don't hear it spin up

You have a bad micro switch in the DVD door. The switch developes a dead spot overtime and it messes up the door logic causing the door to open. Here is the replacement switch if you are good at opening things up and sodering.
