SOURCE: Camera's LCD dosen't work
Awesome site!! My DSC-P41 had a white screen but could still take pictures. I took 4 screws out of the camera(2 on the bottom and 2 beside the memory slot) and the cover popped off. I eased out the flat connector (the small one about 3/16"), cleaned it with an alchol wipe and put it back in and put it all back together. Works great! thanks everyone!! c

SOURCE: LCD SCREEN
LCD = Lousy Camera Device? Get used to using the optical viewfinder. The LCD is great for reviewing images after you've taken them, but it leaves a lot to be desired as a viewfinder. Keeping your camera steady is no small feat at the best of times, but being forced to hold the camera away from your body to view an image through the LCD adds a new level of instability to the picture-taking process.

SOURCE: Cannon sd400 power shot
Sounds to me like you have a broken LCD screen. This is unfortunately very common in the SD200, SD300, and SD400 cameras. Because an LCD display is made up of a few sheets of very thin glass, they tend to break rather easil and then the "dye" leaks out, hence your feather pattern.
If you feel up to taking your camera apart, you can purchase a replacement screen on eBay for around $60-$80. If you don't feel up to trying to replace it yourself there are people on eBay who offer repair services for broken LCDs and they typically charge between $80-$100.
