Compaq V2710us shuts down randomly with a loud "click" OR screen goes blank and PC cannot be revived w/o holding down the power button til shuts down and then re-booted.
Not consistent in lenght of time between start and failure. I have cleaned heatsink/fan [there was dust/dirt] replaced heat sink and used heat sink compound [silicon/zink oxide Radio Shack brand...any better to use?] [according to another post, I may have used too much...will try lesser amount].
Also replaced mother board.
HP/Compaq is recommending BIOS upgrade and then HDD check...but unit doesn't stay up long enough to do. "BIOS upgrade interuptus" doesn't sound like a good idea!
Thanx, Ray
Try to use other hard disk. if it works on your machine then your OS is corrupted. You might need to reformat your hard disk.
Before reformatting your hard drive safe all the files first because everything will be deleted.

Hi Ray, with the clicking noise that preceeds everything or just the screen going blank, honestly that would tell me that the hard drive is going bad on you. If you can get a known good working hard drive in that system, I would go that route and see if the symptoms still keep happening. Try that and let me know. Ben
