Question about Gateway MT6840 Notebook

1 Answer

I have a Gateway NX560XL laptop. The other day it was on battery power and it said it only had 5 minutes left. So i plugged it in, but the charge icon did not show up and it didn't start charging. After the battery drained in a few minuters, it turned off. Now it won't turn back on. The battery shows that it's supposedly 25% full. But it did go down all the way down to 0% before it turned off. If the battery is in and it's plugged it, the battery light flashes red 4 times when i push the turn on button. If i take out the battery and plug it in, the light doesn't flash at all when i push the turn on key. The charger is brand new.

I don't think there were any type of flahing/staying on when i tried wriggling or holding the connector.
I can't check anymore though, because there's been a change, a negative one, in the situation. Last night as the laptop was plugged in i saw a PURPLE light flash a few times. Which according to Gateway's website, PURPLE means that battery is charging.
I also learned that flashing RED means unsufficient power in battery and solid RED means bad/ problematic/ broken battery.
Anyways.. right after those few purple flases i pushed the turn on button and the laptop almost powered on. The blue battery light came on and the turn on button's light came on too. I also heard the noises that i usually hear when it comes on- i guess hard drive and fans spinning or something. Only that nothing came on on the screen. It stayed "turned on" for a few, maybe like 20-30 seconds and then it shut down.
Now the battery indicator doesn't show 25% full anymore, just nothing. And also i don't get the RED flashes when i push the turn on button. Actually, i don't get any kind of flashes-red or otherwise. The light just doesn't come on at all.
So i was thinking, before when i was getting the RED flashes, that meant there was not enough power to boot the computer. After those PURPLE light flashes, maybe the battery charged just enough to almost turn the comp on, but not enough to go all the way. That brief "turning on" , i guess drained the battery all the way, i mean the little power that was left in it, and now there's not even enough power for the battery light to come on.
I was thinking that it's maybe some kind of connection problem somewhere, because the PURPLE light is supposed to stay on, not flash, when the battery is charging. So maybe, somewhere along the way , the different parts of the charger or the input socket don't make a good connetion and that's why the battery is not charging.
All of these guesses are just that- guesses and nothing more, as i know very little about laptop hardware. I was just making guesses based on the little info i'v found on the net and the behaviour of the laptop.
I know that not all laptops work on AC power only, without a battery , but i don't know if this one is supposed to work like that or not. I am not sure if i mentioned it before, but if i take out the battery and plug the charger in , the computer doesn't turn on either. I don't know if that is important, but i just thought i'd mention it.
That you for your help, it is greatly appreciated. If you need any other info, i would do my best to provide it.

As i just said in my "clarification", if i take out the battery and plug the comp in, it still doesn't turn on.
I an not exactly sure how to remove the hard disk, but i am sure i can figure it out. But i have no idea what a memory card is, so i don't know if i am gonna be able to try that part.
By "it's your motherboard that is causing the error", do you mean that it needs to be replaced?
Could you read the "clarification" part i just posted and tell me... if the motherboard is broken, would the laptop be able to almost come on, like it did last night? I also thought that if it's the motherboard, then i wouldn't be getting all those flashing RED lights i was getting before. That was just an assumption though, not based on any knowledge.
Sadly, the laptop is not under warranty anymore,so i would have to pay for whatever repairs need to be done or for parts that need to be replaced. That;s why i am trying to figure out what's wrong without taking it to a shop, so i don't have to pay for inspection. Thank you for the reply.

Ooops, that last comment was a reply to Haayz's Solution #1. I though that it would appear below his comment and that's why i didn't clarify that. Forgive me, i am new here and i'm not sure how to operate the site yet.

When you plug the power connector into the laptop's power input socket and you wriggle this connector, does the charge LED flash on and off. If you hold this connector tight does the charge LED stay on?

Try taking out battery and plug in power. If it works, battery is faulty. If not,
Try taking out your hard disk plug in power, if it works, hard disk is faulty. If not,
Try taking out memory card, if there's a sound, memory card faulty. If no sound, it's your motherboard that is causing the error.
Note: If machine is under warranty no need to pay for the repairs.

I would strongly suggest the good old battery 'hard reset'...

1.) Turn off laptop
2.) Unplug it from power supply

4.) Plug it back into the power supply

If it takes days before fully charge? Have you tried replace your battery or just borrow from a friend battery with the same value? Standard charging for battery is only 12 hours. But more that 24 hours charging is not quite good to your battery.

Battery does not charge

Will the old battery (that you are replacing) charge up at all? If the old battery charges but the new battery will not, then it's likely a bad replacement battery.

To rule out the possibility of a corrupted battery meter inside of windows, you may wish to leave the laptop on battery power only, until it dies. A 5% charge will usually only grant you about 20 minutes of laptop life maximum. Since you left it charging all night, you should get a few hours of life before it dies. If you get a few hours of life, the battery meter software is corrupted.

Most likely though, the replacement battery is bad.

Plug in battery, power light and fan noise cycles on and off

I think it probably went into hibernate. Remove the battery while unplugged from the a/c adaptor for a few minutes. Plug it into the a/c adaptor, and see if it will boot up.
