Question about Generac Guardian 200 Amp Transfer Switch with Service Disconnect NEMA 3R

Generac 4456 does not start on power loss

I have Generac 4456-0 generator that is 5-6 years old. It has the GT-990 engine. It was installed at my old house. When I moved (about 2 years ago) I brought it to the new house. I purchased a new 16 circuit transfer switch. I made the appropriate control wiring changes and removed the external battery charger from the transfer switch as mine has the internal. I placed a new battery in the unit and changed it from LP back to natural. Checked the oil hit the "manual" on the 3 position switch and it fired up. I wired the transfer switch. Upon placing the switch in "auto" and shutting the power off the generator did not start. I left the power off and went out to the generator and manually started it. Once it was running the transfer switch through automatically and was supplying power (although frequency was a little low 58.5 hz but I can adjust). When I restored normal power the transfer switch transfered back to normal power (I did not time it as I walked back out to the generator to shut it down). I checked all the connections at the generator and things seem okay (N1 & N2) have 238-240V so the normal power sense has made it to the generator. I tried placing the unit on "auto" and holding down the test button for an extended period of time (almost a minute) and nothing happened. So I am looking for some advise on what to check next or if somebody says "oh it's this". Thanks Dave

    Hello,

Thanks for the help. I was able to find a technical trouble shooting manual on the web that was a great help. I ordered a new control board because I have heard that they are notorious for going bad. In the process of following the steps I tested the auto-off-manual switch and it was found to be bad! Replaced the bad switch, installed the new control board, changed the oil and filters. Started fine and transfered. Adjusted voltage and Frequency. It is working great. Now just waiting for a power failure!

    Thanks
    Dave

I install and work on these everyday. If you hooked up the transfer switch you probable have a control wire wrong. check the utility power sense wire. That lets it no when to start in auto. it could be a relay or fuses. or a control board.

I have a 16kW Generac Guardian Generator with a 200 amp house service RTS panel (installed 2007). Last night the power went out and the generator started but the unit did not switch to use generator

The problem with the repair service is another matter. Emergency generator and it's switch gear are there for emergency purposes. It has to be exercised periodically. The switch gear should have a toggle switch to simulate a power outage. the switch cuts power to the sensor sensing power from the utility company. This tells the switch gear that power was lost, start the engine and switch over to generator power. Run for a period where engine reached running temperature and switch back to stand by to shut down. Do this periodically, and be grateful the event was not a disaster. Think of your back up electrical system as the spare tire of your car and similar equipment and enjoy your investment. Good people brings you happiness, bad people brings you experience !.

Generator is dragging when load is applied

if it drages less or not at all during night that means air fuel mix screw on the carb needs to adjust for proper intake of oxygen in the cumbustion chamber but you have to set it two times on load and no load condition till the engine runs smooth another reason is when the engine is dragging and there is smoke in the exoust that means engine oil is going up in the cylinder head which results in dragging and loss of power for that matter piston rings has to be changed but firstly check the first one

How to start a gas generator (should the choke be in or out, to the right or the left before starting

Most Generac generators have a lever for the choke that pulls out. So if the generator is being started for the first use or cold you should choke when starting . Let it run for 30-45 sec. then push it in . Once the engine has been run or warm you dont need to choke every time when starting .

With the engine off, check the exciter brushes and slip rings which supply magnetic power for the alternator winding in the stator. Also, check the motor-to-alternator mechanical coupling. Check the breakers for tripping. To service beyond this point requires a schematic of the alternator, a voltmeter, plus knowledge of what the schematic is telling you. Good luck!
