I origionally had SP2 and the problem was there . I then formatted and started with xp alone and the problem was there to ! The laptops had SP2 from factory and I have the origional drivers disc . I have tried several different versions of the video driver and the problem seems to appear after a couple of startups and shutdowns . I will uninstall the driver and run with the generic driver windows uses and except for a slow video response the laptop runs fine . The dvd wont work until I install a video driver though . I have seen lots of people have the same problem , but I havent found a solution ! Why is the driver so unstable ? I have bios version a16 , does this have any bearing on the problem? Thanks , Richard

Did you install the correct driver of your video card?

is your machine was preloaded with vista then re-format to xp? there are some complications if the machine is loaded with vista then change to xp.

i suggested you put it back to windows vista.

Compouter will not start up. When first turned on, I get the Dell Inspiron screen with the bar under the logo, then the screen goes blank for a second and then all there is is the curser in the upper left...

You can try to boot to safemode. When you turn on system as soon as you see Dell logo keep tapping F8,select Safemode under advance boot option. If you we're able to log in to your account you can try to uninstall video driver and restart the system to normal mode then reinstall the video driver.
If you we're not able to boot to safemode , you can try to connect to external monitor toggle to FN+F8 if still not showing anything might be a bad video card.

No sound from xp pro

check device manager if sound driver is installed properly. if it is, try to update driver for the sound card. visit this website:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&ServiceTag=&SystemID=LAT_PNT_PM_D600&os=WW1&osl=en&catid=&impid=

If it is still happening, try to play sound in safemode. if it is still a problem, better have the computer repaired. it might be a bad speaker already.

Lost reinstallation cd and not registered with dell, laptop was obtained thru school so not registered and dell does not still deal with xp pro. need cd to reinstall os and all drivers cannot go online to...

Hi

You could try purchasing the recovery CD's direct from Dell, i know you say that that they dont deal with it, but in my experience if you call them they are helpful

Alternativley you can purchase a seperate copy and then download the drives for the components from the Dell website

Please can i ask that you leave feedback and vote if this has been useful

Hi Roger,

The Windows command you used to uninstall the USB port is correct. If they all work bar one, then i think its safe to say it's possibly a hardware issue.

The only other fix i can think of is to update the BIOS with the latest version from the Dell support website.

Good luck.

Dell m170 pixelated screen on start up will only boot up safemode

The video card could be going out, this happens alot where i work. Are the pixels that are out always in the same spot or does it change as you navigate around windows?

If the pixels are always in the exact same place, its the LCD, If not, its the video card.

Be sure to have the proper drivers, get any updates from www.support.dell.com. select the model number or enter the TAG number off the back or do search for DELL M 170 or Latitude M170 or whatever model it is.

Try this out and if no go, then get back to me.

Good luck

Dell "Drivers and Utilities" CD

Hi, the "No Diagnostic Utility Partition Found" is returned because your laptop does not find the recovery partition on C drive.
Easiest way to create partition is with dell recovery cd. You can buy CDs from dell, buy finding contact on web site or buy from one of the following.
Dell Restore Disk: XP Pro SP2 for ... $35.00 - DIMOSOL - Digital ...
Dell Latitude D600 XP System Recovery CD ... $18.95 - recovery-cds.com ...
Dell Latitude D600 Vista System Recovery ... $18.95 - recovery-cds.com ...

Buy recovery cd according to windows version on sticker at the back of your laptop.
With recovery CD you wont need drivers.

Alternative solution is downloading drivers posted by Maanita after installing Windows from a generic Windows setup CD.
