How do you access the motherboard on the laptop so I can repair the power jack

First, you do not need to replace the motherboard. What you are describing is a very common problem for HP notebooks. You can buy the part on eBay for about $5.00, usually with shipping! It will take a while to take the machine apart - and you must be very careful! but it's an easy fix once you get the notebook apart. This page: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/manualCategory?lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us&lang=en&product=214342& will give you the info on your machine. Just download the manual entitled: Maintenance and Service Guide. You will need Adobe Acrobat to read the file. I recommend that you print the guide before you begin. It will walk you step-by-step on how to disassemble the notebook to get to the power jack. It all requires is some soldering. You may not even need a new jack, but just know that eBay sellers have them.
Please remember to rate my solutions! Thanks

lala linda is right. . . repairing the power pin isn't that expensive ... In fact I've fixed some myself and it's really not that hard. It is time consuming and tedious to make sure that all the bits and pieces fo back in the right place. Take some pix as you take it apart and you will find that's it much easier when you go to re-assemble the unit. btw . . . The power pins are available on the net for $ 10 or less usually.
Also . . .Once you get it fixed get a Cable retention device to make sure you don't damage the pin a second time. Personally I recommend (and use) this one.

No idea why they fixed the problem then said it is the motherboard. There are times though when the motherboard is actually bad and it does need to be replaced even with replacing the jack. With a motherboard it has to convernt electricity and sometimes the wiring is fried or bad. But if it works then let it run, if not, I would take it some where else and have another company check to make sure that they did not melt the board causing it to be a board problem

Yes, you can take the laptop apart and resolder the jack to the motherboard. I've never done it, but have read articles about it and watched a video on youtube about it. Go here and you will find a fast video about it, which will give you an idea about what you have to do (it's a fast motion video). There will be other videos to refer to, also. I couldn't find one for the xz148, specifically, but there are some for the Pavillion series. Sounds like you've identified the problem, the task now is to get it apart to get at the power jack solder points. Take pictures as you take it apart, to help you with any problems reassembling it. Good luck!
Testimonial: "Now that you identified the battery terminals as being BEFORE the voltage regulating circuits, this has the potential to be very helpful!! Thanks!"
