The drum is the component that actually transfers the image onto the page.
Laser Printing 101. When a page is printed to a laser printer it is transferred to the laser printer via the network or usb cable using the driver installed on the PC. This information is then converted back into a format the printer can print through the Format board and the internal firmware of the Printer. This information is then transferred to the drum via a laser beam to a photo-sensitive film on the surface of the drum which is charged and allows the toner from the toner cartridge to stick to the drum which is then transferred to the page and the page is then fed through a Fuser (A heated roller which operates somewhere around the 300-500 degree cetigrade point) to fuse/melt the toner onto the paper which is then fed out to the paper cachment area you collect your printout from.
I hope that helps with your understanding.
