Hi,
I hope that someone can help me with my Z100 and the problems with
the harddiskcontroller.
Even my MSDOS has eroors and I want to get CP/M for that nice machine.
Under MSDOS I can format the harddisk well and there are no problems
during formating. But when I will put the system on the Hdarddisk an
will boot the come the message " Harddisk not ready " .
The Harddisk are ok, at the moment thei are well running on my NCR DMV
and I beleave that my SYSDISK is danaged or the controller makes the
problems. I even have only the usermanual for the Harddiskcontroller
and would need the service manuals for it.
If you can help send me a message..
Thanks

I used to see this when I installed a genuine IBM HD. There is a ready
signal that was not used my IBM, and the Z-100 would try to boot before
the drive was ready.
If this is the problem, you can try booting up after the drive is up to
speed. If you have auto-boot enabled, you may have to reset the system
or abort the auto-boot until the drive is up to speed. I always used
manual boot for this reason.
Hope that helps.

MS-DOS 4.01, uses 18 sectors/track instead of IBM's 17 sectors/track. If you
are still having problems, you could get MS-DOS 4.01 and Monitor-100 ROM
upgrade (3.2) which rewrites the BIOS for the Z and uses the IBM format. It
also makes it possible to use Hard Drive greater than 32 MB, and HD drives,
and Dual Density drives from the 34-pin connector or HD drives (5 1/4 and/or
3 1/2) from the 50-pin connector and configure them for any drive letter
and boot from any drive connected to the Z. If you did not PREP the Hard
Drive you are having problems with, this method should mean that you do not
have to reprep the drive. The MS-DOS 4.01 is available from Paul Herman, Inc.
or directly from Parts Is Parts in New Jersey. I don't have Mike's address
in NJ but I do have the address for Paul Herman it is:
Paul F. Herman, Inc.
9317 Amazon Drive
New Port Richey, FL 34655
Bus # 813-376-5457
Order Line 1-800-346-2152
The price of MS-DOS 4.01 is $89. The price of ZPC, a software emulation of
the PC is $29. Also ask him about the buy-back of your Registered copy of
MS-DOS 3.x for the Z-100 that he is looking for. If you do not take advantage
of MS-DOS 4.01 and its IBM-like 17 sectors/track, you will need to PREP ANY
genuine IBM-like drive to get the Z-100's 18 sectors/track. If you do prep
your drive, you will get a partition for MS-DOS and a partition for CP/M.
Then if you decide to get DOS 4.01, you will have to reprep the drive to
get the 17 sectors/track format back. Paul has Mike Zinkow's address and
phone number so he can help you in the installation. There is a lot more
stuff you can get from Paul Herman, Mike Zinkow, and others would are trying
to keep the Z-100 alive and well. There was also a discussion about replacing
the 8088 with a 486 mini-board to get a super-fast Z-100, plus other things.
I hope this helps.
