The most common cause is there is a build up of lint in between the tension discs, carefully pry them apart and brush out any lint or fluff. Also when you thread the machine through the tension pull the thread from each end to make sure the thread is going in between the tension discs.

The tension my machine seems wrong. When I sew the stitching at the bottom of the material is right but the sewing on the top seems loose.

Tighten the top tension. However, if the bobbin thread is actually pulling up on the top of the fabric, the bobbin tension is too loose. Both top and bobbin threads should pull enough against each other that they meet in the middle of the fabric without causing puckering.

Another thing to remember. ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading the top thread!

Stiches are loose how to adjust the tension

Loose upper thread requires the top tension to be increased (higher number).

When threading the top thread, be sure to ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot while threading so the thread will seat properly in the tension disk.

If the bobbin thread is loose, then the bobbin tension needs to be tightened.

Can't get tension adjusted. Top loose, botton thread comes up over top fabric

bottom thread is loose, tighten the tensioner in the bobbin, (you might have to loosen the top to balance.) make sure thread was properly routed.

Why does the bottom thread on my 185k Singer sewing machine keep tangling.

Your bottom thread looks like the top tension is too loose or not being fed through the tension disc.
1. While you thread do it with the pressure foot up. Make small pulls while threading to make sure there are no snags.
2. When you finish threading put the foot down. Check for resistance on the thread. There should be some; not excessive though.
3. Always start at four on tension and adjust as you need to.

I have a White 7140 quilters sewing machine. I can't find the manual and I am having trouble threading it. The stiches are coming out loose on top, but ok on the bottom. I have tried adjusting the...

try http://www.singerco.com/accessories/instruction-manuals and search by typing in your model number. I couldn't see it there but there are other white machine manuals there so maybe one will give you help with threading. It sounds like the bobbin thread is not under tension, usually if the top is loose it is the bottom thread which is not tensioned and visa versa.

The thread on the right needle keeps breaking, the tension seems very loose and the wheel doesn't seem to add tension

It is very very important to follow the manual when threading the machine. One missed or out of place thread will throw the entire machine off. I know I had the same problem.

My threading is too loose?

Thank you - fixed it completely... though you have to take the bobbin case out completely to access that screw. - Remove the 2 screws holding the metal plate with a nickel and remove the plastic piece over the bobbin case - there is a small metal lever on the lower left side that needs to be pressed down. You can then remove the bobbin case. There are 3 screws - the center one is the tension adjustment. It was painted green on my machine.  It appears that it is not a regular setting change, but a bad adjustment from the factory. So if you don't feel comfortable doing all that returning the machine for another will likely fix the issue.
